The Centro de Investigação e Estudos de Sociologia (CIES-Iscte) of Iscte - Instituto Universitário de Lisboa is opening a call for applications for a PhD Student Research Grant under the protocol established between CIES-Iscte and OberCom - Observatório da Comunicação.

Work plan:
Participation in activities to analyse social networks and data relevant to the area of communication within the scope of the Observatório da Comunicação.

Skills/Qualifications

a) Experience in research and work carried out in Observatories or similar organisations in the field of communication;
b) Previous experience using social media and network analysis software (crowdtangle; Sentione, etc.) and tools/methodologies for analysing and classifying media and disinformation.
c) Previous experience in the use of qualitative (documentary and content analysis) and quantitative techniques (experience in the construction of face-to-face and online surveys, as well as the production of statistical information, development and management of survey processes, univariate, bivariate and multivariate analysis of statistical data using the SPSS computer programme).
d) Good knowledge of written and spoken English and an appreciation of another foreign language (preferably Spanish, Italian or French).
e) Capacity to write clearly and produce research reports in the context of analysing news content.

Specific Requirements

Admission requirements:
Candidates must hold a Master's degree in Communication, Culture and Information Technologies with a minimum mark of 17 and be enrolled in a PhD programme in Communication Sciences (in accordance with Article 6 of the Research Grant Regulations of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P. - Reg. no. 950/2019). Academic degrees obtained in foreign countries need to be registered by a Portuguese institution, in accordance with Decree-Law no. 66/2018 of 16 August and Ministerial Order no. 33/2019 of 25 January. Benefits

The stipend corresponds to €1,259.64 according to the table of stipends awarded by FCT, I.P. in Portugal (https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Tabela-de-Valores-SMM_atu…).
The corresponding voluntary social insurance is added to the amount of the grant, when applicable and if the candidate chooses to take it out, as well as personal accident insurance. The grant will be paid monthly by bank transfer.

Duration of the grant:
The scholarship is for a period of 12 months. The scholarship contract may be renewed within the duration of the research project and in accordance with the stipulations of point 4 of Article 6 of the Research Scholarship Regulations of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P. in force.

Selection process

The selection process will be based on curricular assessment. If several candidates demonstrate that they have the right profile to carry out the work plan, the jury reserves the right to call the three best ranked candidates in the curricular assessment for an interview, which will have a weighting of 20% in the final grade.
If the jury deems it unnecessary to hold interviews, the final weighting of the curricular assessment will be 100%.
The curricular assessment criteria are based on:
a) academic record (30 %);
b) research experience (40 %) ;
c) the experience demonstrated in the items indicated in the preferential factors ( 30%).
The curricular assessment of the candidates will be carried out in accordance with the criteria indicated and will be carried out on a scale between 0 and 20 points.
The selection board reserves the right to:
a) invite the highest-scoring candidate to the position in question, following the order established in the final ranking list, whenever the selected candidate does not meet the requirements for formalising the contract or in the event of unavailability.
b) not awarding the grant if none of the candidates matches the desired profile.

Composition of the Selection Panel:
Candidates will be selected by a jury made up of: Professor Gustavo Cardoso, who will preside, and the members Professor Cláudia Álvares and Professor Vania Baldi.

The call is open from 19 February to 01 March 2024.
