Offer Description
We’re now accepting applications for our PhD program: unleash your potential in a vibrant, international and supportive environment.
The FMI International PhD Program, originally established in 1998, trains doctoral students to become future leaders in academia, industry and other sectors. The program provides a unique opportunity to make exciting discoveries in the life sciences and uncover the molecular and cellular basis of disease. In addition to state-of-the-art scientific training, the program offers individual mentoring and fosters early independence and interdisciplinary research.
The Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research (FMI) in Basel, Switzerland, is at the forefront of biomedical research across three broad areas: Genome Regulation, Multicellular Systems, and Neurobiology. Our affiliations with the University of Basel and Novartis, coupled with our location at the heart of Europe’s top hub for the life sciences, offer unmatched opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations.
With 20 research groups and about 350 employees, our institute brings together more than 40 different nationalities and offers a friendly and collaborative atmosphere. PhD students admitted to the program pursue a research project under the guidance of an FMI group leader and a thesis advisory committee. Successful applicants are funded for the entire duration of the PhD and have access to cutting-edge technology platforms, career events and professional development workshops, as well as a wide range of theoretical and practical courses at both the FMI and the University of Basel. Since 2016, we also offer an MD-PhD Program that provides research-oriented medical students and physicians with the opportunity to carry out fundamental biological research.
Our selection process is based on written applications and in-person interviews on site. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to the FMI to present their scientific interests, discuss with recruiting group leaders, and interact with group members and current PhD students.
The deadline for applications for this Spring Call is May 01, 2024. Please submit your application to our PhD program or our MD-PhD program online.
