Offer Description

Structure you will join

Geosciences Environment Toulouse (GET), a joint research unit of the CNRS, IRD, Toulouse 3 University and CNES, is a multi-disciplinary Earth and Environmental Sciences research laboratory attached to the Observatoire Midi-Pyrénées (OSU OMP).

One of GET's strengths is its ability to implement a multidisciplinary approach (strong skills in geology, geochemistry, geophysics, geodesy and hydrology, complemented by approaches in geography and sociology) and complementary skills in experimentation, field and space observation and digital and analogue modelling. This approach makes it possible to develop original research to understand the study of objects and processes on different time scales (long and short time scales) and space scales (from the global Earth down to the scale of the mineral), taking into account the couplings between the different Earth envelopes (lithosphere, asthenosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere).

Context

This post-doctoral project is part of the Agence Nationale de la Recherche (ANR) "WIVA" project, which aims to establish a law of lateral erosion of rivers and thus to better model the evolution of valley width.

Your mission will consist of quantifying and modelling recent lateral erosion of a meandering river (Rangitikei River, New Zealand), on a short (decadal) and intermediate (centennial to millennial) time scale.

Decadal erosion will be measured by analysing 14 years of terrestrial Lidar data on the sides of the Rangitikei valley acquired at five sites since 2009 (see Lague et al., 2013 (doi: 10.1016/j.isprsjprs.2013.04.009). Centennial to millennial erosion will be estimated by analysing the geometry of Holocene-dated river terraces (see Bonnet et al., 2019 (doi: 10.1038/s41598-019-44533-4) and Guyez et al., 2022 (doi: 10.1002/esp.5357). Finally, these data will be used to constrain the laws of lateral erosion and river widening using the River.lab (ex EROS) numerical model (see Davy et al., 2017 (doi: 10.1002/2016JF004156). The candidate's ability to effectively manipulate high-resolution topographic data and numerical models and to work with different and up-to-date quantitative methods will be essential.

Your future team

You will be based at the University of Toulouse, in the Geosciences Environment Toulouse (GET) laboratory, and more specifically in the LOA team under the principal supervision of Stéphane Bonnet and Sébastien Carretier (PI of the WIVA project).

You will be working closely with Dimitri Lague (Lidar) and Philippe Davy (modelling) at the Géosciences Rennes laboratory, both remotely and during regular short trips.

These teams are internationally renowned for their use of Lidar in geomorphology, fluvial geomorphology and experimental and numerical modelling of landscapes and surface processes.

You will be in close contact with the other members of the WIVA project, at GET, GR, CRPG (Nancy) and CEREGE (Aix en Provence), who make up the WIVA project consortium. In addition, the geomorphologists and other scientists in these organisations provide an uncommon disciplinary and multidisciplinary environment for a young geoscientist.
