Job description
We are currently inviting applications for one full-time position in computational social/political sciences at the Research and Expertise Centre for Survey Methodology (RECSM) (Department of Social and Political Sciences) based at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF), Barcelona, Spain.
Candidates may be postgraduates, or last year graduate students, of computer science, information systems, informatics or similar areas.
The position is full-time. The successful candidate will work on ongoing projects at RECSM and develop their own line of research in computational social sciences and/or computational linguistics.
RECSM is a multidisciplinary Centre focusing on research in survey methodology, linguistic and survey research, survey data analysis, experimental research, political behaviour, statistical methods for the social sciences, and social-personality psychology. RECSM offers advice and expert knowledge on survey research to academic, governmental and commercial researchers. For more information, see: https://www.upf.edu/web/survey
Research line of the contract: Computational Social Sciences and Computational Linguistics
Tasks:
- Work on developing software for social research (programming tasks).
- Develop new lines of social and political computational research.
- Work with a team of researchers and programmers, in an international environment.
- Work on literature review of methods/applications in computational social sciences.
- Publish in international peer-review journals and present at academic conferences.

Required qualifications for candidate
- Excellent written, oral and electronic communication skills in English. Speaking Catalan is a plus.
- Master’s degree in computer science, information systems or informatics.
- Familiarity with programming languages (e.g Java, Python, C#) and databases (e.g. MySQL, MongoDB) are required
- Familiarity with software engineering project patterns and clean coding is also a plus.
- Proven DevOps experience in software for research-oriented projects
- Proven experience in computational linguistics
- At least two peer-reviewed publications in computational linguistics and/or computational social sciences
- Problem solving, analytical and numerical skills.
- Ability to work with limited supervision and work rigorously.
- Ability to deliver results, meet deadlines and manage time effectively.
- Ability to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams.

Additional Information
Salary/duration/benefits/facilities
Type of contract: Indefinite, in accordance with the terms of article 23 bis of Law 14/2011, of 1 June, on Science, Technology and Innovation.
The candidate will work full time starting in March 1, 2024, with a gross salary aprox: 36.447,34 € (Group 2)
The labour contract includes all the benefits of the Spanish public health and social security system, as well as additional financial support for the participation in project-relevant conferences and scientific meetings.
The position has no citizenship requirement. We encourage applications from female candidates and members of minority or marginalized groups.
The candidate will become a member of the Research and Expertise Centre for Survey Methodology (RESCM)
This position offers a career plan and possibilities for growing. The place of work is based in Barcelona but there is the option for remote work.
