Offer Description
The task is part of the RePower project, which examines the interaction between global geopolitics and natural resources as part of the green transition. In the task, a road map of the developing systems of renewable energy is compiled.
The EU is seeking to cut its dependency of Russian fossil fuels and accelerate the transition to clean energy. To this end, the EU has launched the REPowerEU plan, which is part of the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF). The Recovery and Resilience plan is part of Finland's Sustainable Growth Programme, which accelerates reforms and investments.
The Natural Resources Institute Finland's RePower project examines the interaction between global geopolitics and natural resource management as part of the green transition. The project studies the impact of wind and solar power on the loss of natural values, as well as responsible renewable energy construction, social acceptability, and the reconciliation of different regional characteristics of land use. In addition, information will also be generated on data-driven optimisation of the use of energy sources, and the economic competitiveness of renewable energy production and products, their synergistic integration with existing energy systems and potential for improving resource efficiency, the suitability of incentives and the economic and regional impacts and value added are assessed.
The different components of the project will be used to draw up a roadmap for emerging renewable energy systems as part of Finland's energy system. The primary task of the senior scientist is to bring together the results of different work packages so that they can be used to develop a roadmap for more self-sufficient energy system with much greater use of renewable energy. The senior scientist is responsible for the roadmap in a coordinating role. The senior scientist works closely with all work packages and will receive guidance from Luke's RePower steering group. The senior scientist will contribute to the acquisition of data and in particular to the reporting of the results as required by the funders and in the form of scientific articles.
Our expectations of the applicant
The post is open to a person having PhD-degree in relevant higher university degree. The senior scientist should have strong expertise in the field of renewable energy and (geo)politics and/or (geo)economics, an understanding of techno-economic changes from a transition perspective, and the ability to analyse large-scale systemic changes in the operating environment, especially in the energy system. Methodological skills in roadmaps and scenario building will be an asset. The applicant should have experience in research project implementation and scientific writing. In addition, communication and collaboration skills are required to apply and translate research knowledge into practice and to collaborate efficiently with researchers from different disciplines. The task requires strong stakeholder engagement, ability and willingness to network as well as fluent Finnish and English language skills.
