Offer Description
Postdoctoral Scientist: Mitochondrial homeostasis in the healthy and diseased nervous system
The Laboratory of Mitochondrial Biology, led by Professor Tatjana Kleele, is part of the ETH Department of Biology. Our research combines super-resolution microscopy and automated image analysis with molecular biology and proteomics to investigate how mitochondrial remodeling supports cell-and tissue-specific functions, particularly in the nervous system.
Project background
A decline in mitochondrial health is a hallmark of many neurodegenerative disorders, but mitochondrial plasticity is also a major contributor to neuronal maturation and plasticity. Within the framework of an SNF Starting Grant, this project aims to investigate the molecular mechanisms and regulatory pathways ensuring mitochondrial health and function in neurons. In human iPSC-derived and rat primary DRG neurons, we will explore how mitochondria are remodeled during neuronal maturation, under high electrical activity, and in pathological conditions.
Deciphering the molecular mechanisms controlling mitochondrial homeostasis in neurons will advance our knowledge of how mitochondrial and metabolism are regulated in neurons and how disbalances in these processes result in pathology.
Job description
As a key member of our team, your primary responsibilities will include:
- Mastering and optimizing live-cell super-resolution microscopy of cultured neurons
- Establishing in vitro models of acute and chronic neurodegeneration
- Establishing novel assays to stimulate and image neurons simultaneously using small, artificial neuronal networks on a chip
- Active participation in research activities, including publishing scientific papers and presenting your research at conferences and workshops
- Engagement in national and international collaborations
- Supervision of PhD, Master and/or Bachelor students
In general, postdoctoral researchers at ETH Zurich have a full-time employment. A part-time employment may be considered in exceptional cases (e.g. child- or familycare, other projects or employment).
Your profile
- You hold a PhD degree or equivalent in the fields of biology, neuroscience, biochemistry, biomedicine or related disciplines
- You are skilled in cellular and molecular biology techniques
- You have practical experience with neuronal cell cultures
- Experience in high-end microscopy and image analysis is a plus
- Clear written and oral communication skills in English
- You have an independent mindset, high flexibility and like to work in an international, team-oriented environment.
- You are highly motivated and have an excellent track record
