Offer Description
Approximately 6% of the global population suffers with inner ear disorders, leading to issues such as balance problems and hearing loss. Our overarching objective is to establish a model, originating from laboratory research, that can pave the way for the development of effective treatments and cures for these disorders. Our research group stands out for our exclusive focus on human tissues, including fetal tissues, adult tissues acquired during surgery, and work with pluripotent stem cells. We investigate the developmental aspects of the inner ear in these tissues and subsequently correlate this development with various inner ear pathologies. Your role in our team will involve enhancing our capability to cultivate inner ear neurons and create a high-throughput culture model for these neurons. To this end, you will work with our inner ear organoids. The emphasis on the high-throughput design is pivotal, as this model will be instrumental in conducting a drug screen to pinpoint agents that can prevent the loss of inner ear neurons, potentially offering significant benefits to patients.
Requirements
· You hold a master’s degree in medicine, biomedical sciences, neuroscience, technical medicine, or a related field.
· Prior experience in cell culture.
· Proficiency in pluripotent stem cell cultures and organoid cultures is highly advantageous, but not necessary.
· Expertise in the inner ear is not mandatory, but strong motivation, ability to work independently, and collaboration within a multidisciplinary team are crucial.
· You are a responsible person who takes into account our research group as well as your individual success.
· Proficiency in scientific English (listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills). Knowledge of Dutch is not required
Additional Information
You will be given an employment contract for the production of a PhD thesis for the duration of the program with a maximum of four years. The salary amounts to € 2.901,- gross per month in the first year, up to a maximum of € 3,677,- in the last year with fulltime employment (scale Pro, CLA UMC).
