Offer Description

We are seeking to recruit a researcher for the development of the Resist project (Regions for climate change resilience through Innovation, Science and Technology) of the CareNet research group of the IN3 of the University.

The aim of our project is s to study how to detect the effects of extreme weather events earlier, allowing the development of regional measures, policy instruments and technological solutions that address the characteristics of the different territorial realities. Special attention will be paid to the most vulnerable activities and spaces, such as parks and other recreational and tourism facilities, as well as schools, health centres and other key facilities. CareNet will now contribute to working on the social aspects of this adaptation and foster a more inclusive, diverse and collaborative prevention, preparedness and response strategy.

The position is funded by the RESIST project. The project has a duration of five years and includes 56 countries of the European Union, Norway and Ukraine. The project will be implemented in Catalonia through the collaborative and interdisciplinary work of the Directorate General of Civil Protection of the Centre for Applied Research in Hydrometeorology (CRAHI) of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), the research group CareNet (IN3, Universitat Oberta de Catalunya), the company Hyds and the city councils of Terrassa and Blanes.

The conclusions derived from the work carried out in Catalonia will be shared with the Italian region of Puglia and the Portuguese region of Baixo Alentejo, especially those related to flooding and forest fires.

Responsibilities:

  • To carry out fieldwork, mainly through ethnographic methods (interviews, participant observation, dialogue tables, data collection) in 2-3 Catalan localities (Terrassa, Blanes and Alcanar).
  • To understand the role and needs of professionals and administrations involved in the management of climate risks and emergencies.
  • To understand the role and needs of the public, especially the social communities and social groups most exposed to these risks (floods, drought, heat waves and forest fires) or emergencies.

The successful candidate will be awarded a temporary full time contract of 18 months, starting in March 2024.

The reference headquarters will be located at 22@, Rbla. Del Poblenou, 156, in Barcelona. We work with an open work model that combines teleworking with onsite work, depending on organisational needs and the nature of the tasks
