Offer Description

One PhD position sponsored by the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Doctoral Network EXACT-6G is offered at EURECOM in Sophia Antipolis, France.

EURECOM is a Graduate school and Research Centre in digital sciences located in the Sophia Antipolis technology park (French Riviera), a major European place for telecommunications activities. It was founded in 1991 in a consortium form [GIE] that allowed EURECOM to build a large network of renowned academic and industrial partners. The Institut Mines Telecom is a founding member of EURECOM consortium. EURECOM research teams are made up of international experts, recruited at the highest level, whose work is regularly honored and has earned international recognition.

The Doctoral Candidate will join the recently launched EXACT-6G Doctoral Network, which is funded by the Horizon Europe Research Program through the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Action, under the title: “Explainable Automation for Continuum 6G infrastructures”.

EXACT-6G research project aims to propose, design and validate a novel and agile 6G system architecture and enabling technologies, combining RIS with a Compute Continuum infrastructure and Distributed, Intelligent orchestration that seamlessly integrates Cloud, Edge and Far Edge nodes under a self-synthesized and self-managed PaaS system. Furthermore, EXACT-6G proposes new concepts, such as Pervasive Orchestration, and designs new Explainable AI models for scalable, autonomous control of the infrastructure, and allows microservices to “follow” users, being tracked by Joint Communication and Sensing mechanisms. In this context, EXACT-6G will build a training network of 10 Doctoral Candidates who will conduct top-notch research towards the development and experimental evaluation of a gamut of techniques, methodological frameworks and tools.

The Doctoral Candidate hosted by EURECOM will work on leveraging explainable AI (XAI) techniques to devise algorithms and mechanisms to manage and orchestrate Cloud Edge Continuum resources. His/Her work will address (i) the development of novel XAI algorithms to improve the explainability of advanced ML algorithms such as LSTM, RNN as well as Reinforcement Learning; (ii) the development of XAI-based models to be integrated into the closed control loop to achieve Zero-touch management of Cloud Edge Continuum resources; (iii) the leverage of XAI and Machine Reasoning to improve Decision-making processes; (iv) the integration of the XAI-based control loop into the DIMO framework envisioned in Exact-6G.

The Doctoral Candidate will be offered a three-year, full-time contract as well as enrollment in a PhD program.  An up-to-six-month secondment is foreseen at Nokia Bell Labs (Paris) as an integral part of the contract.

In addition to developing his/her research project, the DC will:

  • learn to master academic writing and author journal publications.
  • present his/her work at project workshops, plenary meetings, and international conferences.
  • participate in secondments to consortium partners.
  • contribute to the supervision of undergraduate students.

Candidates should send their applications by March 31st through https://www.exact6g.eu/oaf-2024. Incorporations will start as of April 2024.
