Project MUSAC – “Exploring Malta’s Urban Space with AI Classification of Malta’s 3D CloudIsle”

Applications are invited for a Research Support Officer (RSO) to carry out duties in relation to the MUSAC Project which is funded by the Malta Digital Innovation Authority (MDIA), and in which the University of Malta is the lead partner or partner or a collaborator. The RSO may also be required to work on other projects undertaken by the Department of Criminology within the Faculty for Social Wellbeing.
Applicants should be in possession of a Master’s degree in Artificial Intelligence.

The full-time post is for a period of up to 50 weeks.
The initial remuneration per annum (inclusive of any cost-of-living adjustment) shall be €25,709 (RSO I) or €28,829 (RSO II).

Further Information
The aim of this project is toemploy machine learning techniques to comprehensively analyse 3D point cloud data to gain insights into the evolution of urban areas in Malta over time. Further information may be obtained by contacting Prof. Saviour Formosa at saviour.formosa@um.edu.mt. The RSO may also be required to work on other projects undertaken by the Department of Criminology within the Faculty for Social Wellbeing.
The appointee should satisfy the following criteria:
Possess a M.Sc in Artificial Intelligence,
- At least 2 years’ experience in Computer Vision and other AI related work such as AI system prototyping and/or consultation;
- Proficient in various programming languages and ML techniques such as C, C++, C#, Python, Tensorflow, Keras, SQL, Matlab, Git (to be specified in the CV);
- Experienced with academic research and publishing;
- Fluent in Maltese and English.
The appointee will be expected to undertake the following tasks:
- produce deliverables and related reports within the stipulated time frames as specified in the project description;
- keep detailed progress reports and abide to all the conditions imposed by the project;
- assist in the dissemination process with the relevant stakeholders via a workshop/seminar;
- attend project internal meetings and consortium meetings;
- travel and attend meetings/conferences as the need arises;
- take part in the submission of EU-funded research proposals to sustain related research beyond the funding of the project; and
- perform any other project related task as instructed by the project coordinator and key experts.
The appointee will be expected to work at such places and during such hours as may be determined by the University authorities.
The selection procedure will involve:
- scrutiny of qualifications and experience claimed and supported by testimonials and/or certificates (copies to be included with the application);
- shortlisting; and
- an interview and / or extended interview.
The post is for a period of up to 50 weeks, which will be subject to a probationary period and to the provisions of the Statutes, Regulations and Bye-Laws of the University of Malta which are now or which may hereafter be in force.
