Context And Mission

 

The Computational Social Science programme envisions preparing social sciences and humanities for the era of data, simulations, and artificial intelligence (AI). Our mission is to foster collaboration between social scientists and computer scientists, making high-performance computing (HPC) accessible to all researchers in the field. Through innovative approaches, we aim to apply social science research to contribute valuable insights for informed policy-making.

In our pursuit, we focus on key research areas such as Demography, Democracy Quality, Socioeconomic Impact of Climate Change, Social Innovation, and History/Cultural Heritage. Employing statistical models, AI/machine learning, Large Language Models (LLMs), and agent-based simulations, our innovative methods are applied to diverse datasets from national statistics, surveys, social media, news, historical archives, qualitative data, citizens' volunteered data, government and industry data.

As the Scientific Coordinator/Senior Researcher, you will play a pivotal role in advancing the programme's objectives, working closely with Mercè Crosas, Head of Computational Social Science.

 

Key Duties

 

  • Facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration between social scientists and computer scientists, promoting cross-department strategic research projects and activities, internal and external.
  • Coordinating and overseeing research projects within the department's focus areas.
  • Advancing computational methodology for social sciences and humanities.
  • Managing the access and reuse of diverse datasets, including surveys, national statistics, social media, historical archives, laws and national plans, interviews, citizens' volunteered data, and industry data using the Dataverse platform, in close collaboration with BSC´s data management team.
  • Leveraging high-performance computing resources advanced computational analysis in social science research, in collaborations with BSC´s Operations team.
  • Coordinate the technical writing of competitive research projects strategic to the department at the international level.
  • Provide support in talent recruitment processes and financial matters, in coordination with the research support departments in the BSC.

  • Education
    • Ph.D. in Computational Social Science, Social Sciences, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Proven experience in coordinating interdisciplinary research projects.
    • Expertise in applying statistical models, AI/machine learning methods, and agent-based simulations to social science research questions.
    • Proficiency in managing diverse datasets relevant to social science research.
    • Familiarity with high-performance computing resources and their application in social science.
    • Project management skills: reporting, documenting and planning.
  • Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Experience in the application of LLMs (Large Language Models) for social sciences.
    • Knowledge of innovative data sources, including social media, citizens' volunteered data, and industry data.
    • Previous involvement in research areas such as Demography, Democracy Quality, Socioeconomic Impact of Climate Change, Social Innovation, History, or Cultural Heritage.
    • Excellent writing and presentation skills in English.
