Offer Description
The Analysis and Advanced Materials for Structural Design (AMADE) research group from the University of Girona is looking for candidates to fulfill a PhD position in the field of materials science and engineering.
Non-destructive testing techniques (NDT) play a crucial role in evaluating the integrity and structural health of materials and components in engineering without causing any damage. Radiography, an NDT method using X-rays, produces images of an object's internal structure, aiding in material characterization and defect detection. However, it projects onto a two-dimensional image, losing three-dimensional information. Computed tomography reconstructs three-dimensional structures from data collected at various angles, but it may be impractical for large or high aspect ratio objects. To address these challenges, laminography has emerged as an NDT method for inspecting the internal structure of layered materials, like composite laminates. Nevertheless, laminographic inspection requires a deep understanding of parameters influencing image quality. In this context, the PhD student will contribute to optimizing laminography parameters for characterizing composite laminates used in structural applications (i.e., carbon fibre reinforced composites). The student will apply this technique to identify and analyze different forms of damage within composite layers, critical for ensuring the reliability and safety of structures, especially in industries like aerospace, automotive, and wind energy, where composite materials are prevalent.
We are looking for highly motivated candidates with a master’s in materials or mechanical engineering or similar, specifically attracted to experimental and numerical or simulation tasks and who are interested in conducting their PhD in a dynamic and highly international frame.
Duration of the contract: 3 years
