Offer Description

There are several storage options available for hydrogen, including liquid hydrogen (LH2), compressed hydrogen (CcH2), and gas hydrogen (GH2), each with their own advantages and disadvantages. An intelligent combination of these different storage states is expected to make it possible to use the exergy in the system, i.e. the difference in enthalpy between storage states, to reduce requirements on thermal isolation whilst increasing the dormancy time of the storage system. In this PhD research the candidate will explore a potential design methodolgy for multi-state hydrogen storage systems, that are centered around a central cryo-compressed hydrogen storage tanke. The work will be divide in three main tasks:

  1. Sizing of the multi-state hydrogen storage tanks.
  2. Performance optimisation of composite pressure vessels (CPV) operating at different states.
  3. Structural unification of multi-state storage tanks.

As PhD candidate you will be a member of the TRIATHLON project, a Horizon Europe project that will facilitate foundational research needed to develop robust, low-maintenance, and low-emission hydrogen-electric powertrains for megawatt-class aircraft. TRIATHLON stands for Thermodynamics-driven control management of Hydrogen powered and electrified propulsion for aviation. The project is run by a consortium from universities and SME's spread over six different countries. You will be one of five PhD candidates within the project. TRIATHLON will bring large-scale sustainable aviation one step closer to reality.

The entry date is as soon as possible.
