Offer Description
Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences create a unique environment for multidisciplinary, inspirational and high-impact research and education. Our university community has its competitive edges in technology, health and society. www.tuni.fi/en.
The Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology is looking for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow specializing in computational biophysics. The position will be part of a new large EU project and will be filled for a fixed-term period of three years.
The Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology (MET) with over 70 professors and staff of 900 is committed to high quality research and education in the fields of biomedical engineering, biotechnology, medicine, and health technology. We conduct basic, applied, clinical, and translational research in collaboration with Tampere University Hospital (TAYS). Our existing research areas in health research include biomedical engineering fields from biomaterials and microtechnologies to health data science, cell and molecular biology, with applications in areas such as cancer, cardiovascular and celiac diseases, immunology, and ophthalmology.
The laboratory lead by Professor Hyttinen, Computational Biophysics and Imaging group consists of three senior researchers, four post-docs and about 15 Phd and MSc students. The research group's main interest is understanding and assessing mechanisms of biophysics by developing in-vitro, 3D bioimaging and computational modelling tools, for assessing the cellular functions to gain new knowledge and methods for future personalized medicine.
Job description
We are seeking a talented and motivated postdoctoral researcher to develop computational models to decipher biophysics, namely electrophysiology, biomechanics and energetics of human smooth muscle cells in order to understand the biophysical effects of mutations leading to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) in cardiovascular system. The work will be conducted within a new large EU project coordinated by Professor Hyttinen (SMASH-HCM) with 14 partners in leading European research institutions and companies.
In addition, data analysis, writing publications and research reports as well as funding applications and disseminations to the wider community will be needed. Furthermore, the job includes collaboration with research colleagues and support staff, both internally and within international networks. The postdoctoral researcher should provide guidance and support to students, contribute to relevant teaching activities, and participate in scientific meetings.
Requirements
We are looking for versatile and independent researchers with an applicable doctoral degree and a solid background in computational modelling of biophysical systems. Background on simulations on electrophysiology, biomechanics or energetics of cardiovascular or muscle cells and systems is preferred. Candidates with additional experience in biomedical data analysis and collaborative projects will be highly valued.
A proven ability to supervise M.Sc. and Ph.D. students will be considered as an advantage. The position may also offer possibilities for some teaching duties in the future. We require that the candidate is able to meet the responsibilities identified in laboratory and ethical guidelines.
