Offer Description
Tasks to be performed:
The research assistant will join a multidisciplinary project team led by Luca Bonatti, director of the Reasoning and Infant Cognition lab, https://www.upf.edu/web/rico, Center for Brain and Cognition, https://www.upf.edu/web/cbc, Pomeu Fabra University, working on the project, “Seeing inferences: Behavioral, linguistic and neuropsychological evidence for primitives of thought (SI)”. The aim of the project is to understand the logical bases of human thought. We operationalize this question by developing detailed case studies. Here, we build nonverbal scenes embodying disjunctive reasoning and entailment relations, expanding our research to the conception of alternative possibilities. We propose to test infants and adults with oculomotor and neuroimaging techniques to look for signatures of logical representations and inferences induced by the passive inspection of simple scenes. Building upon previous results, we propose to realize four goals:
- Understand the nature of the representations elicited by simple nonverbal disjunctive reasoning, in infants and adults.
- Describe the dynamics of brain activation elicited by simple nonverbal reasoning.
- Approach the study of nonverbal entailment, focusing on the notion of alternative possibility and quantification in nonverbal complex scenes.
- Transform the procedures devised in the context of previous projects to study elementary reasoning into diagnostic tools for early detection of atypical development.
Tasks:
The research assistant will participate in tasks for goals 1, 3 and 4:
- Design and run EEG and eyetracker experiments with infants and children and adults, using Python and Psyscope X.
- Analyze results with R.
- Assist in writing papers.
The duration of these tasks is estimated for a period of 6 months.
Dedication and working hours: Part time (10h/week)
Planned remuneration approx: 7.993,68 € gross per year
