Offer Description

Regenerative Architecture aims to exceed the net-zero impacts of sustainability and develop ways of improving our environment. Bioreceptivity is one of the strategies for achieving this aim and describes “the aptitude of a material to be colonized by one or several groups of living organisms without necessarily undergoing any biodeterioration” (Guillitte, 1995). "Bioreceptive Wood” (Bio+W) aims to design and develop the first wooden bioreceptive panel as part of the regenerative architectural design toolset. Performing conventional architectural functions, Bio+W simultaneously promotes secondary colonisation of the wood panel by cryptogamic covers—a type of biological soil crust, composed of a range of different organisms including cyanobacteria, algae, fungi, lichens, liverworts, and mosses. The environmental impacts of this panel when implemented is, therefore, potentially highly significant. However, all wood is prone to water damage and rot if it is exposed to water, which can cause swelling, warping, and decay, with associated aesthetic issues. The project, therefore, aims to establish whether sustainably sourced, untreated types of hard or soft wood can be realistically provide attractive paneling combined the benefits of decay for installation in urban spaces. Consequently Bio+W examines the designed and gardened flow of water over wooden panels of different hardness (hard e.g., oak, and soft e.g., pine and cedar) to develop a method for the strategic application of patterns that maximises water and air flow, in ways that promote the accelerated growth of cryptogamic covers while maintaining the wood’s integrity through targeting the surface of the panel.

In this research project you will explore new applications for natural wood in architectural design. Wood is an increasingly popular building material that is used in a wide range of facade applications, from cladding and decking to
