Applications are invited for a 36 month Early Stage Researcher (ESR) position within the UTOPIAE Marie Sklodowska Curie Research Training Network, to work on a project entitled "Optimal Energy-Driven Aircraft design under uncertainty."
UTOPIAE research programme aims at training, by research and by example, 15 Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) in the field of Uncertainty Quantification and Optimisation. The ESRs will be provided with the training and skills needed for pursuing successful careers in academia and industry and for increasing the innovation capacity of the EU. Through the ESRs individual research projects, the UTOPIAE network will develop fundamental mathematical methods and algorithms to bridge the gap between Uncertainty Quantification and Optimisation, and between Probability Theory and Imprecise Probability Theory for Uncertainty Quantification, and to efficiently solve high-dimensional, expensive and complex engineering problems.
The project envisaged for the ESR recruited by CIRA is titled
“Optimal Energy-Driven Aircraft Design Under Uncertainty”.
The design of aerodynamic shapes numerical optimization is an important topic for the aerospace industry and is very difficult from a computational point of view, especially if complex fluid dynamic models are used for assessing high-fidelity aerodynamic performance. If, in addition to that, the robustness of performance is required compared uncertainties in the description of the aerodynamic shape or in operating conditions, the necessary computational resources may increase by a further order of magnitude, and is required to develop appropriate techniques to bring the resource demand computational to a level acceptable in industrial practice.
Within this framework, the objectives are:
• To build a multi-fidelity model for energy driven aircraft design;
• To develop an MDO loop for robust reliable design of aircraft with reduced drag and minimal fuel consumption;
• To develop an integrated design tool capable of integrating uncertainty quantification, multi-criteria optimization and advanced CFD simulations;
• To develop reliability-based design optimization algorithms based on the Generalized Inverse Distribution Functions and on innovative risk measures.
The successful applicant will work in a multi-disciplinary team with members of the Department and their partners in the UTOPIAE Marie Sklodowska Curie Research Training Network. For further information on UTOPIAE, please see http://utopiae.eu.
In particular, part of the research project should be carried out in two secondments of three months each. The first secondment is planned at the end of the second year at the Institute of Aerodynamics and Flow Technology of DLR (German Aerospace Center) and it will be mainly related to the work on reliability-based design of energy-driven aircraft. The second is planned in the third year at THK (Technische Hochschule Köln, Germany) to work on many-objective optimisation techniques for expensive problems.
The training programme will involve attendance of the UTOPIAE network formal training events (Global Virtual Workshops) and enrolment in the PhD programme “Industrial Engineering” at the University Federico II in Naples, which is an associated partner of the UTOPIAE training network.

*The successful candidate will receive a financial package consisting of a living allowance, a family allowance (where applicable) and a mobility allowance, according to the rules for Early Stage Researchers (ESRs).
Applicants will be required to meet the Marie Sklodowska Curie Early Stage Researcher eligibility criteria. In particular, at the time of appointment they should be within the first 4 years of their research career and should not have resided in the host country for more than 12 months in the last 3 years immediately before the appointment. Optional desirable skills or experience:
• Aerospace Engineering or Mechanical Engineering MSc degree (preferably with focus on Fluid Mechanics).
• Advanced programming skills (C, C++, Fortran, Python, MPI, OpenMP).
• Experience in Optimization or Reliability based optimization.
• Background on statistical methods.
• Previous experience in using CFD codes
• Publications (including MSc thesis), preferably on themes related to the planned research work (positively evaluated but not mandatory).
• Awards (for example "best conference paper", "best student paper", "award to MSc thesis"
• University experience in different countries or work experience in international groups.
