Offer Description
Job description
As part of the FLOW, research environment, the department of Engineering Mechanics announces a postdoc position on the topic of “Numerical models of gas transfer in biological/blood flows”.
The purpose of the project is to attain unprecedented accuracy and efficiency in modelling mass transfer in fluid flows, in particular biological flows and gas transport across membranes. We will do it by devising algorithms to simulate membrane and cell, e.g. red-blood cell, motion and deformation and gas transfer within one or more of the different interface tracking methods already available within the group. The objective is also to be able to efficiently run on thousands of cores and use modern accelerated architectures as GPUs.
The aim is to extend existing tools for multiscale numerical simulations of heat and mass flux in laminar and turbulent flows. This fundamental knowledge is important in several medical application and devices where gas exchange in artificial lungs is one such example. The work of the post-doc will be discussed with the supervisors and be conducted in close collaboration within the groups in Fluid Mechanics at KTH as well as with established groups worldwide with which KTH already has collaborations. The project will be carried out in close connection with two cross-disciplinary (engineering - medicine) and application focused ERC and EIC (European Innovation council) projects.
