Offer Description

Faculty of Science

Location: University Park
Salary: £35,000 to £40,000 per annum (pro rata if applicable), depending on skills and experience
Closing Date: Friday 19 January 2024

The University of Nottingham (UoN) invites applications for a R&D Scientist to join our exciting collaboration with Photek Limited, a long-established provider of specialist vacuum detectors and camera systems for photon and particle detection. Photek manufacture image intensifiers, photomultiplier tubes, streak tubes, plus associated electronic and camera systems, and serve the defence industry amongst other markets.

This is an exciting opportunity for you to carry out a high-profile Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) project to develop a new generation of products for the company. This innovative challenge will involve process development of the growth of semiconductor materials by Molecular Beam Epitaxy, and the design and development of the necessary production vacuum technology.

You will be based at Photek’s St Leonards on Sea site (near Hastings), working directly with Photek’s R&D Manager and closely with other stakeholders to navigate between commercial requirements and the technical challenges presented by the KTP.

This collaboration between Photek and UoN offers the opportunity to develop an entire semiconductor production process with the aid of an experienced development team. The role will combine industrial experience, project management, liaison with suppliers, and structural, optical, and electrical analysis of the product. The range of detectors developed will form the basis of new instruments in Photek’s product range.

As a pro-active individual, you will have the ability to build relationships, influence, and engage collaboratively between the teams at Photek and the UoN and their wide customer base. The KTP will involve presenting directly to customers and attending trade shows and conferences. The writing of publications and technical papers to enhance Photek’s profile will be required.

You should hold a PhD (or be close to completion) in Physics, Chemistry or a related discipline. Previous experience in a related role working in a commercial/industrial business is highly desirable and experience of vacuum technology, thin film deposition, and/ or semiconductor growth would be advantageous.

This exciting opportunity is funded through a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP). KTP is a UK Government scheme promoting sustained and mutually beneficial relationships between universities and industry. Through the KTP, you will be fully supported by the university and mentored to nurture your talent. You will have your own budget (£4,000pa) for training and CPD, helping you develop your skillset and reach your personal/professional career goals.

This is a fixed term contract for 24 months, available from 1st April 2024. Hours of work are full time (37.5 hours). Job share arrangements may be considered.

UoN is committed to providing competitive employment packages whilst supporting the well-being of our staff to help them reach their full potential. As a university employee, you will have access to the resources of UoN as well as a range of benefits and rewards, including staff discounts, travel schemes and a highly attractive pension scheme.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Dr Richard Campion (richard.campion@nottingham.ac.uk). Please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
