Offer Description

The Ph.D. project is on the mineralization of CO2 by magnesium oxide (MgO) minerals. The selected candidate will use atomistic simulations to explore mechanisms of Mg-carbonate formation on MgO (nano)minerals exposed to the atmosphere. This research aims to support direct air capture technologies for mitigating hikes in atmospheric CO2 levels, as well as advancing fundamental ideas on mineral growth.

The proposed project presents a high level of interdisciplinarity. It integrates concepts of chemistry/geochemistry, physics, molecular modeling as well as experiments in order to respond to environmental and industrial problems.

This PhD position is part of he European SEED programm and is for 36 months with an expected starting date in September 2024. The selected Ph.D student will spend 24 months in the molecular modeling group of the SUBATECH laboratory at IMT Atlantique (Nantes, France) and 12 months in the molecular geochemistry group at Umeå University (Sweden). The program imposes several conditions. Especially, the selected candidate must not have spent more than 12 of the last 36 months in France by January 31, 2024 (deadline for application). For more information on the Ph.D topic (topic ID: SEED-PhD-8-carbon-sequestration) and conditions and to apply, please see:
