Eligibility criteria

The following documents must be attached to the application, failing which it will not be admitted to the competition:

  • The candidate's curriculum vitae, with an e-mail address, with all artistic game development production being accessible via a link (itch.io, Steam, or other) and, if applicable, scientific production (scientific articles, books, chapters, communications, etc.) being accessible on the RESEARCH GATE, ORCID or Ciência VITAE platform, or as a PDF file;
  • Certificates of qualification for academic degrees held, specifying the final classification and, if possible, the marks obtained in all subjects taken. Alternatively, a declaration of honour from the candidate that they have completed the degrees required in the notice by the application deadline;
  • Letter of Motivation;
  • Letters of Recommendation (maximum of two) stating the context of the candidate's academic and/or professional relationship with those who recommend them, with reference to this competition;
  • Work projects that you are developing within the scope of the Games Design degree that you are attending;
  • Any other documents that candidates consider relevant to assessing their merit;
  • Recognition of Foreign Degrees and Diplomas - In the case of academic degrees awarded by foreign higher education institutions, and in order to guarantee the application of the principle of equal treatment for candidates who hold foreign and national academic degrees, it is mandatory to recognise these degrees and convert the respective final classification to the Portuguese classification scale. The recognition of foreign academic degrees and diplomas and the conversion of the final classification to the Portuguese classification scale can be requested at any public higher education institution, or at the Directorate-General for Higher Education (DGES, only in the case of automatic recognition). In this regard, we suggest you consult the DGES portal at the following address: http://www.dges.gov.pt.
  • Documents proving that you hold academic degrees and diplomas, or that they have been recognised when awarded by foreign higher education institutions, may be waived at the application stage and replaced by a declaration of honour by the candidate (link), which will only be verified when the grant is contracted. This declaration must attest to facts that occurred prior to the application.
Selection process

Applications considered admissible will be scored on a scale of 0 to 100 in each of the following assessment criteria:

  • Criterion A - Evaluation of the portfolio of work carried out within the scope of the Degree in Game Design that you are attending, with a weight of 40%.
  • Criterion B - Integrated assessment of the candidate's curricular and/or professional and artistic career, based on an overview of their scientific merits, with a weight of 40%.
  • Criterion C - Motivation letter, weighted at 20%.

For the purposes of deciding on the award of scholarships, candidates will be ranked according to the weighted average of the classification obtained in each of the four criteria, translated into the following formula:

Merit ranking = (40% × A) + (40%× B) + (20% x C)

For tie-breaking purposes, the candidates will be ranked on the basis of the marks awarded for each of the assessment criteria in the following order of precedence: criterion B, criterion A and criterion C.

The Jury may decide to invite the three candidates with the best scores to an interview, in which case the following sub-criteria will be applied:

a. Interpersonal skills (20 per cent)

b. Demonstrated knowledge of research in the field of the competition (50 per cent)

c. Motivation (10%)

d. Language skills (20%)

The classification of the Interview will be obtained by applying the following formula:

Interview = a + b + c + d

If an interview is held, the final classification for Merit and Interview will be obtained by applying the following formula:

Final classification = (Merit*0.7) + (Interview*0.3)

If no interview is held, the final classification will correspond to 100 per cent of the assessment obtained in the Applicant's Merit.

The jury may not award the scholarship if the quality of the candidates is lower than desired.

The candidate will be asked to participate in R&D activities taking place at UI&D HEI-Lab.

Additional comments

Dissemination of results:

The final results of the assessment will be publicised by means of a list ordered by the grade obtained, displayed in a visible and public place in the Host Unit and also by email to all candidates. The notification will be sent to the email address used/indicated by the candidates when submitting their application. The selected candidate must express their intention to accept the scholarship in writing. In the event of non-acceptance, the scholarship will be awarded to the candidate in order of final ranking.

Complaints and appeals procedures:

If the result is unfavourable to the award of the scholarship applied for, candidates have a period of 10 working days to express their opinion, if they wish, at a prior hearing for interested parties, under the terms of articles 121 and 122 of the Code of Administrative Procedure (DL no. 4/2015 of 7 January). A complaint may be lodged against the final decision within 15 working days, addressed to the Chairman of the Selection Board.
