Offer Description
Title: Temporal and spectral variability of neutron stars in the optical, UV and X-ray energy bands
A two year postdoc position on fast variability of neutron stars has opened at the High Energy Astrophysics Group at the INAF Observatory of Rome to work in collaboration with Dr. Alessandro Papitto
The successful applicant will chiefly analyse and interpret observations of quickly variable neutron stars in Galactic binary systems. These include proprietary data obtained with the fast optical photometer SiFAP2 – an instrument permanently mounted at the Galileo Telescope and managed by our group – and by the Hubble Space Telescope, XMM-Newton and NICER telescopes. The investigation will be mainly aimed at (but not restricted to) the search and characterisation of fast variability (e.g. optical/UV pulsations) from millisecond pulsars to measure the physical properties of these neutron stars.
Non-millisecond-pulsar-experts are also encouraged to apply.
Project: Cutting-edge strategies to identify new GEMS (Gravitational- and ElectroMagnetic wave) Sources in the Universe with current and next generation detectors – 2020BRP57Z GEMS – PRIN MUR 2020
The appointment will be for two years, with the possibility of an extension. The gross salary is 32k€ (equivalent to ~2.4k€/month after taxes).
Expected starting date: from spring 2024 (to be negotiated with the successful applicant).
Documents needed:
– filled and signed application forms (see annexes in the call document)
– a copy of their ID card
– a CV with a list of publications
to be sent by email before 2024 January 10th to the address inafoaroma@pcert.postecert.it, with the subject “Selezione per assegno di ricerca Temporal and spectral variability of neutron stars in the optical, UV and X-ray energy bands” :
Please, also arrange to send a brief (~1 page) description or research interests and two recommendation letters to the same address above.
All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply, especially those from under-represented groups. Please, contact Dr. Alessandro Papitto (alessandro.papitto@inaf.it) for informal inquiries.
