Job description:

DESY

The DESY Nanolab has an active in-house research program within the fields of X-ray physics and nanoscience. In addition, it provides characterisation and preparation methods which are complementary to the techniques available at the different DESY accelerator-based light sources. We are seeking a talented PhD student to perform operando heterogeneous catalysis experiments relevant for the current energy transition. The aim of the project is to gain fundamental insight into reactions under industrially relevant gas pressures in the 50 - 200 bar regime by operando synchrotron experiments. This PhD position is within the Helmholtz-Lund International Graduate School (HELIOS). HELIOS connects two major knowledge hubs in the Baltic Sea Region: Hamburg and Lund and involving three partners: Deutsches Elektronen Synchrotron, Lund University and the University of Hamburg. It brings together expertise from different physics disciplines such as particle physics, ultrafast photon science, molecular physics and nano(bio)science.

About your role:

  • Operate and improve dedicated high-pressure catalysis setup for x-ray diffraction
  • Preparation and characterisation of model catalyst nanoparticle samples
  • Operando xrd experiments at PETRA III and the ESRF
  • Data analysis and manuscript writing

About you:

  • Master's degree in physics, chemistry or material science
  • Experience with in situ / operando experiments
  • Experience with X-ray and / or electron diffraction
  • Experience with ultra-high vacuum technics is an asset
  • Experience with catalysis and nanoscience would be an advantage
  • Very good knowledge of English (both speaking and writing) is mandatory
  • Ability to work in team

Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. We attach particular importance to appreciative cooperation and the well-being of our DESY employees. Gender equality is an important aspect for us. To support work life balance we offer flexible working hours, variable part-time, job-sharing models and participation in mobile work. You will benefit from our family-friendly and collegial atmosphere, our established health management and occupational pension provision. As a public funded employer, we offer you a secure workplace and facilitate your individual career with our comprehensive training and development opportunities. Remuneration is according to the regulations of the TV-AVH. DESY offers its employees a financial supplement for a job ticket at both locations.

We look forward to receiving your application via our application portal:
