  1. Description of the position:

The main objective of the EXMUS project is to study the production and trajectory of Portuguese musicians exiled in France during the Estado Novo period, also exploring how they participated in the complex network of political and cultural organizations that resisted the dictatorship. The project is organized in three lines of research: an ethnographic history of individual paths; a cultural, social, and political history of musical practices; and an analysis of musical creation and production. The research team combines experts from different fields (musicology, ethnomusicology, political, social and cultural history, theater and film studies) and will carry out an extensive survey of documentary archives in Portugal and France, as well as a collection of oral testimonies by musicians. and other agents involved in music production in exile. Several case studies will be developed, considering different musical genres and practices, from the 1930s, around the communist composer Fernando Lopes-Graça and his activity during his Parisian exile, until the 1960s and 70s, a period in which several singers of popular music, mainly associated with the radical left, were active (José Mário Branco, Sérgio Godinho, Tino Flores, among many others). The project will seek to promote a global perspective on exile, which will necessarily cross the traditional boundaries between national and international history, and will develop a close partnership with organizations dedicated to the discussion and preservation of the memory of resistance to the dictatorship. The main results of this project will be the publication of a collective volume of essays, articles in scientific journals and book chapters, the organization of interdisciplinary seminars, an international conference, a website, two audio CDs, a documentary film and a documentary exhibition.
