Offer Description

The Department of Landscape, Spatial and Infrastructure Sciences, Institute of Transport Studies is currently seeking a Postgraduate Research Associate (PhD position) in transport simulation and analysis.

Extent of employment:         30 hours per week

Duration of employment:      from March 2024, limited for 4 years

Gross monthly salary and pay grade in terms of collective agreement for university staff (payable 14 times per year): B1 lit. b, € 2.458,00

Responsibilities:

  • Participation in the development of a simulation model for the investigation of mobility behavior
  • including new mobility services (e.g. micromobility) in the greater Vienna area
  • Cooperation with national and international experts regarding traffic simulation / modelling, data exchange and knowledge transfer
  • Participation in ongoing research projects and support for the acquisition of new research projects at the institute
  • Writing scientific publications and publishing the results in Journals and active participation in (inter)national conferences
  • Writing a dissertation in the research area of the institute is desirable
  • Support in teaching and examinations, in the further course of self-employment implementation of courses and independent teaching in the field of transport
  • Participation in the organizational and administrative tasks of the institute

Required skills and qualifications:

  • Diploma degree in Civil Engineering and Water Management, Transportation or Civil Engineering, (Technical) Physics, Computer  Science, Urban or Spatial Planning, Environmental and Bioresource Management, Geodesy and Geoinformation or other equivalent university degree
  • Very good knowlegde of spoken and written English
  • Very good German language skills (B2) or the willingness to German sufficient knowledge in the first year conduct courses in German to learn
  • Basic knowledge of programming and data analysis and willingness to familiarize yourself with scientific software packages (e.g. scripting languages, GIS software, MATLAB, R, ...)
  • Interest in traffic and mobility behaviour and enjoyment of scientific work
  • Interest in working with students
  • Ability to work in a team, problem-solving skills and the ability to innovate

Desired skills and qualifications:

  • Basic knowledge in the field of transport planning or comparable technical Planning
  • Demonstrated ability to write high-quality scientific papers (e.g. very well graded theses or publications)
  • Experience with simulation programs (e.g. for traffic modelling such as visa, MATSim,
    SUMO, Aimsun, Vissim, or agent-based simulation) or big data analyses are available from
    Advantage or willingness to acquire this expertise quickly
  • Willingness to teach as well as didactic training
  • Ability to self-organize and take personal responsibility in the fulfillment of tasks
