Main scientific field: Translation Studies

 

Mandatory admission requirement:

In compliance with Article 6 of the FCT Research Grant Regulations (Reg. no. 950/2019):

- to be enrolled in a Doctoral program in Translation Studies or related areas;

 

Preferred factors:

  • to be enrolled in a Doctoral Program in Translation Studies or related areas with the participation of the NOVA School of Social Sciences and Humanities;
  • to present his/her doctoral project in one of the strategic research areas for the Translationality strand of CETAPS (machine translation literacy, non-professional translation, translation and sustainability, translation teaching, indirect translation, translation history and theory, descriptive translation studies, intersemiotic translation, epistemic translation, translation and artificial intelligence, translation tools, etc);
  • to have linguistic competence in English (level C2).

 

Work plan:

Candidates must present their PhD project in at least one of the areas of research in Translation Studies. The project must be presented in English and include: provisional title; name and affiliation of (potential) scientific supervisor(s) (where applicable); abstract; state of the art; research questions and objectives; methodology and work plan; bibliographical references; timetable (for four years); an explanatory note on how the proposed doctoral project fits into and/or contributes to the activities primarily developed by the Translationality strand of CETAPS (https://www.cetaps.com/teals-translationality/).

Once the application has been successful, during the course of the scholarship, the candidate will be expected to: (1) diligently carry out all the activities necessary to complete the proposed doctoral project (including submitting papers for publication and participating in relevant scientific events); (2) actively and committedly participate in the projects and activities of the CETAPS research group in which he/she will be integrated.

 

Duration of the scholarship(s): The grant contract will be for a period of 12 (twelve) months, and is expected to start on January 1st 2024. It may be eventually renewed.

 

Application submission deadline: From 13 September 2023 to 16 October 2023.

 

Application:

Applications must be formalised via email, by sending an application letter together with the following documents:

a) Motivation letter (in English, c. 800 words);

b) Proof of enrollment in a doctoral program in Translation Studies or related fields;

c) Detailed curriculum vitae (in English), indicating the candidate's e-mail address, including references to works published, submitted or presented at scientific meetings, participation in research projects, training and professional and extracurricular activities in the areas relevant to the competition, etc;

d) Diplomas or certificates, preferably with final grades (in the case of diplomas or certificates obtained abroad, the conversion of the final grade to the Portuguese scale must be presented);

e) Research project (in English, c. 5000 words), including: provisional title; name and affiliation of (potential) scientific supervisor(s) (where applicable); abstract; state of the art; research questions and objectives; methodology and work plan; bibliographical references; timetable (for four years); an explanatory note on how the proposed doctoral project fits in and contributes to the activities primarily developed by the Translationality strand of CETAPS;

f) Maximum of three letters of recommendation (optional);

g) A copy of a scientific article or other work relevant to the area of the competition (in English or Portuguese) previously written by the candidate in an academic context (optional);

h) Other diplomas or certificates considered useful for the application (optional).

 

In the case of academic degrees obtained in foreign higher education institutions, it is necessary to present the recognition of the degrees obtained, in accordance with DL Nº 66/2018, of 16th August; or, in the absence of recognition at the time of application, a declaration under oath that he/she will get this recognition before the contracting of the grant in case he/she is selected.

Nevertheless, it is mandatory to present the recognition until the contracting of the grant.

Amount of monthly maintenance allowance:

The amount of the grant corresponds to € 1199.64, according to the table of values of grants awarded directly by FCT, I.P. in the country (https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Tabela-de-Valores-SMM_202…). To this amount must be added the voluntary social insurance corresponding to the first bracket, if the candidate chooses to receive it, as well as personal accident insurance.

 

Workplace:

The successful candidate will be integrated and work in the Translationality strand of CETAPS, located in the NOVA School of Social Sciences and Humanities, Lisbon, under the scientific supervision of a professor/doctor appointed by CETAPS.

 

Selection methods:

Applications considered admissible will be scored on a scale of 0 (zero) to 20 (twenty) in each of the following evaluation criteria:

Criterion A: curriculum evaluation (25%);

Criterion B: evaluation of the research project and motivation letter (50%);

Criterion C: interview (online) (25%).

 

For the purposes of deciding on the award of grant, candidates will be ranked according to the weighted average of the classification obtained in each of the three criteria, translated into the following formula:

Final ranking = (25% A) + (50% B) + (25% C)

 

For tie-breaking purposes, candidates will be ranked on the basis of the marks awarded for each of the assessment criteria in the following order of precedence: criterion B; criterion C; and criterion A.

 

Candidates with a weighted score of less than 14 will not be considered for the grant.

Publication / notification of results:

 

The final results of the evaluation will be announced by means of a list sorted by final mark obtained, sent by email to all candidates. The selected candidate will be notified by email.

After the communication of the provisional list of evaluation results, the candidates have a period of 10 working days to comment, if they so wish, in a prior hearing of interested parties, under the terms of articles 121 and following in the Administrative Procedure Code. The final decision must be made within a maximum of 60 working days after the conclusion of the prior hearing of interested parties or the public consultation.

A complaint may be lodged against the final decision within 15 working days, or an appeal may be lodged with the maximum executive body of the funding entity within 30 working days, both after the respective notification.
