We are offering an exciting full-time opportunity for a data scientist to specialize in the field of disaster impacts on health as part of our vibrant Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters (CRED) team. Our project, funded by the Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (BHA) of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), is the perfect arena for showcasing your outstanding communication skills and deep passion for data within a meaningful context centered around understanding climate change impacts and disaster risks
Your Impact
As a member of CRED, you will contribute to over 40 years of invaluable work in international disaster health studies. You'll have the chance to enhance our internationally recognized EM-DAT database, systematically detailing disaster impacts on a global scale, dating back to 1900 and updated daily.
Your Role
As a data scientist in our team, you will have responsibilities, such as:
• Writing Python and R code to support data science activities.
• Enhance the content and quality of the EM-DAT global disaster database.
• Implement and improve disaster impact data collection activities.
• Assist countries in building data capacity and establishing local databases.
• Participate in external communication activities (meetings, website, reports).
• Develop and execute questionnaires, spatial data analyses, and systematic reviews.
• Foster teamwork in a dynamic environment, actively providing input, feedback, and support to the rest of the team to face ongoing
challenges.

To be considered for this role, we are looking for someone who possesses the following qualifications:
• An MSc degree in data science, geography, engineering or a related field.
• Proficiency in database management and programming software, and/or skills in spatial data analysis.
• A solid scientific and statistical background.
• Some working experience preferred.
• Experience with EM-DAT (preferred, but not essential).
• Website development skills (preferred, but not essential).
• Geoprocessing and/or Natural Language Processing skills (preferred, but not essential).
• Excellent organizational and communication skills, with fluency in English.
• A flexible and adaptive mindset, ready to meet changing demands that may extend beyond primary assignments.
