Offer Description
Tasks to be performed:
The research assistant will join a multidisciplinary project team led by Nuria Sebastian, director of the Speech Acquisition and Perception lab, https://www.upf.edu/web/sap, Center for Brain and Cognition, https://www.upf.edu/web/cbc, Pomeu Fabra Univeristy. The project aims at understanding how exposure to language uniquely shapes how humans process speech. The project bridges two different lines of research: Neural Models of Language Entrainment and Psycholinguistic models of the perception of prosody. The project explores the research questions:
Q1. How does language-specific sensitivity to prosodic knowledge emerge? The ITL law.
Q2. How does articulatory/motor information affect entrainment? Processing of audiovisual speech.
The Research Assistant will support testing infants and adults.
Tasks. The research assistant will:
- Assist with EEG data collection (adults and infants).
- Assure EEG studies with infants are efficiently run, which will help minimize the attrition rate.
- Preliminary data analysis.
- Assist with article writing.
The duration of these tasks is estimated for a period of 9 months.
Dedication and working hours: Part time (20h/week)
Planned remuneration approx: 15.909,70 € gross / year

- Bachelor Degree or equivalent
- Undergraduate degree in Psychology and/or Physics, Mathematics or Engineering.
- Completing a Master in Cognitive Neuroscience or similar.
- Good English skills, both written and spoken.
- Programming skills (e.g., Python, Matlab, R).
- Demonstrable experience in a cognitive neuroscience laboratory (preferably with speech acquisition and perception).
- Experience in EEG data collection.
- Experience in EEG data processing and analysis (preferably EEGLAB Toolbox; MATLAB).
- Have Spanish nationality, be a national of one of the Member States of the European Union. If you have non-EU nationality, you need a work permit to be hired on October 15, 2023.
The expected start date is October 15th, 2023, the job is in Barcelona.
Additional Information
The selection of the candidates will be made through evaluation of the curriculum and, where appropriate, with the carrying out a test and/or interview. Valuation will be as follows:
- Academic Training (0-40 points): Performance in the required studies and alignment of the topic of the final master’s degree with the tasks of the project.
- Professional experience and adequacy to the proposed profile (0-40 points): Previous experience in a cognitive neuroscience lab and knowledge of language and prosody.
- Other merits (0-20 points): Programming skills (Python).
The minimum score to pass the selection process is 70 points. The candidate with the highest score in the selection process will be offered the job and in case of resignation, the position will be awarded to the next person in order of score obtained, as long as the established minimum score has been passed.
