About Urban Resilience research Net (URNet)

The Urban Resilience Research Network (URNet) is an international research community interested in understanding, exploring and broadening multidisciplinary perspectives on urban resilience. Founded in 2010, the network now counts around 400 members, sprawled across more than 50 countries and gathering leading authors of scientific articles that defined and still contribute to address the most pressing research challenges of urban resilience research. The Chair of the network is Prof. Lorenzo Chelleri, which is leading a research group at UIC Barcelona School of Architecture, where the research assistant position will be hosted.

About your role

We are looking for a junior assistant researcher to be working with the Barcelona based team of the urban resilience research network at UIC Barcelona on a Horizon Europe funded Project titled UP2030, started in January 2023 and dealing with urban sustainability and resilience.

UP2030 brings together 47 partners working to enable sustainable transformations in 10 European cities. UIC Barcelona group is coordinating the creation of a Benchmarking system for European cities pathways toward just and resilient Carbon Neutrality future.

The research assistant will be involved in the preparation and moderation of workshops on KPIs to assess the application of specific tools and methods for urban transformation in different European cities, and support the publication of the results in leading academic journals. In house at UIC Barcelona, an Int. Msc in Urban Resilience, as part of the URNet education and dissemination activities, is gathering more than 50 international leading professors. The awarded applicant will also be involved in workshop activities and teaching within the international master program.

Key tasks

The research assistant from one side will support the work on benchmarking and KPIs for just and resilient carbon neutral urban transformations, and support partners in gathering data and publishing them. On the other side, the work will also consist in organizing and supporting the moderation of international workshops and other dissemination activities.

  • A Ph.D. is not required for this position, and could be actually pursued through the 2 years of work in UP2030.
Specific Requirements
  • Background in urban sustainability, urban transformational resilience (not emergency-post emergency resilience), climate change, urban planning (not architecture).
  • Solid and up to date knowledge about the recent frameworks and assessments for Carbon Neutrality and resilience (policy and academic frameworks).
  • Previous work experience of at least 1 year after Msc level– preferred 3 years.
  • Previous fieldwork experience (recollecting data, ability to perform interviews and elaborating results).
  • Previous experience in writing papers/reports – preferred scientific papers
  • Preferred experience in organization or moderation of scientific events
  • Preferred experience in scientific dissemination activities (blog-post writing, Podcast, social media etc)
  • Ability to work across different disciplinary domains, through multiple tasks at once, high level of motivation and soft-skills (patience, empathy, flexibility, etc)
  • Fluent in English, written, spoken, and other languages will be positively considered (especially Spanish).
  • A Ph.D. is not required for this position, and could be actually pursued through the 2 years of work in UP2030.

Benefits
  • Net salary beyond of the Spanish Ph.D. scholarship, 1.200 to 1.500E/month (Post-dot level) depending of the candidate experience.

Selection process

The following aspects of the applicant's CV will be taken into account:

Professional knowledge and background aligned with the project tasks and requirements (50%)

Competences to deal with project tasks (50%)

 

The UIC Barcelona selection process, following that which is outlined in the European OTM-R, will be carried out in two phases: a first pre-selection phase and a second interview phase.

The PI of the project Prof. Lorenzo Chelleri will be tasked with carrying out both phases, both the initial evaluation and the subsequent interviews. He might partner with other experts inside and outside of UIC Barcelona for completing the two phases of the selection process.

The following criteria will be assessed in the initial phase:

  • University and educational Background
  • Any further professional experience outside university education
  • Interdisciplinarity and exposure to an international environment of the candidate

In the second phase of interviews, the following will be considered:

  • Discussion of the candidate’s CV and knowledge about frameworks for carbon neutral and resilient cities.
  • Oral communication skills
  • Interpersonal soft skills
