Offer Description

The Université catholique de Louvain is inviting applications for a doctoral fellowship in History (or Religious Studies, or Theology with a specialization in Church History) on "The Catholic Church and the AIDS Crisis in Europe (1983-1997) at the crossroads of contradictory developments".

Working at the intersection of religious history, history of sexuality, LGBT history and urban history, the dissertation shall explore - on the basis of a field survey (archives, oral history) focused on three metropolises (Brussels, Paris, Madrid or Milan, or another European major city) - the complexities and contradictions of the relationship of Catholic communities and institutions to the AIDS pandemic in Europe. From the perspective of a "religious history of sexualities", the project intends to hightlight the tension between greater doctrinal emphasis in the face of the newfound visibility of LGBT communities during the AIDS crisis and the complexity of collective and individual positions and commitments (hospital and movements, spiritual and ecclesial experience of the individuals and of the pastors, transfers of militant skills, etc.).

The dissertation will be supervised at UCLouvain by prof. Jean-Pascal Gay. A joint supervision in another European University is not only possible but desirable (according to the final choice as to the geography of the investigation). The dissertation may be written in either English or in French.
