Offer Description
X-MESH is a ERC Synergy project that was funded in 2022 and starts in September 2023.
In X-MESH, we develop an innovative approach - X-MESH - to overcome a major difficulty associated with numerical simulation in engineering: we aim to provide a revolutionary way to track physical interfaces in finite element simulations. The idea is to use so-called extreme mesh deformations. This new approach should allow low computational cost simulations as well as high robustness and accuracy. X-MESH is designed to avoid the pitfalls of current ALE methods by allowing topological changes on fixed mesh.
The key idea of X-MESH is to allow elements to deform until they reach a zero measure. For example, a triangle can deform into an edge or even a point. This idea is rather extreme and completely revisits the interaction between the meshing community and the computational community, which for decades have been trying to interact through beautiful meshes.
We would love to hire a post doctoral fellow that has an experience in finite element modelling and mesh generation. The main goal here is to work on the 3D meshing aspects of X-MESH : large deformations, innovative front tracking approaches, theoretical developments on finite element convergence with zero size elements.
We offer an exciting work environment with a unique ERC project in the field and a motivated team of researchers.

Ideally, the candidate(s) should have a good knowledge in the field of finite element modelling. The domain of application is not very important here -- the X-MESH project aims to be quite broad with applications in fluids, solids and even electromagnetism.
A solid knowledge of C/C++/Python programming is recommended. Knowledge of mesh generation is a plus.

Additional Information
The Catholic University of Louvain offers an exceptional research and living environment in a new, pedestrian-friendly city about 20 km from the capital of Europe. It is very well served by public transportation.
The research work will be done in the framework of an ERC synergy with 2 PIs who have more than 25 years of experience in joint research work.
Having a Ph.D. in related domains of the X-MESH project.
Application by email. Online interview at first followed if necessary by a visit in Louvain-la-Neuve.
