OFFER DESCRIPTION
The Catalan Institute for Water Research (ICRA) based in Girona (Spain) is a research institute created in 2006 by the Catalan Government within the framework of the Research Centres Program of Catalonia. The trustees supporting ICRA are the Department of Economy and Knowledge from the Catalan Government, the Catalan Water Agency and the University of Girona. This research centre tackles water-related issues from a comprehensive scientific and technological perspective. ICRA has the mission of implementing a holistic and multidisciplinary approach to water research, considering all the components related to water and wastewater cycles. ICRA is offering an Research Technician Advanced position to work in the Resources and Ecosystems and Water Quality areas. The candidate will work within the frame of the project REMÉDIATE (TED2021-131005B-C31), that aims at understanding the fate of emerging contaminants (mainly pharmaceuticals and pesticides) under induced in-situ nitrate attenuation processes. This is a joint project coordinated by the University of Barcelona (UB), with the participation of the Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena (UPCT) and ICRA. In this project, the study site will be the Mar Menor lagoon and its related coastal aquifer of Campo de Cartagena (SE Spain), which is a paradigmatic example of a heavily polluted area due to the intensive use of water resources, agricultural and urban pollution, that led to high nitrate concentrations in groundwater and the lagoon, and to a huge impact of ecological and socio-economic implications. ICRA leads the EMFASIS subproject that aims to provide an exploratory analysis of the occurrence of ECs in the Campo de Cartagena aquifer, determine the hydrogeological dynamics of the system and monitor the progress of these pollutants under in-situ nitrogen remediation strategies.
KEY DUTIES
We are looking for a motivated person with interest on laboratory and field work. The tasks of the Research Technician will involve: 1) Sample preparation, analysis, and quantification of emerging pollutants (chromatography and mass spectrometry); 2) the use of innovative suspect screening analytical methods to identify emerging pollutants (mostly pharmaceuticals, antibiotics and pesticides) in groundwater and related matrices; 3) prepare and conduct batch experiments to identify sorption and degradation properties of selected pollutants in the field area soils to understand the fate and transport of contaminants in groundwater; 4) Collaborate on the monitoring campaigns and field work, if needed. As with all technicians and researchers, a small percentage of the time will be allocated to communal services such as joint laboratory maintenance, standards preparation, etc.
