Job description

  • You will be working in the research group Medicinal Chemistry (UAMC) on one of the following research topics:
  • Research topic 1: Discovery of novel small molecule autophagy inducers. You will be working on optimization, synthesis and primary biological evaluation of autophagy-inducing compounds that have been discovered via High Throughput Screening. Optimal molecules will be investigated in preclinical animal models of peripheral neuropathies and cardiovascular disease through on-campus collaborations. This project is supported by FWO and BOF funding.
  • Research topic 2: Discovery of selective inhibitors and activity-based probes for Family S9b proteases. The S9b family contains proline-selective serine proteases, several of which are drug targets, e.g. for type II diabetes (DPP4) or oncology (FAP). You will work on the design and synthesis of new molecules that can specifically target individual representatives of the S9b family. Your compounds will be validated in enzymatic, cellular assays and -if successful- in in vivo animal models. This project is supported by FWO funding.
  • Next to experimental research, you will write project reports for your supervisor on a regular basis, write scientific papers and support grant writing.

Profile and requirements

  • You hold a doctorate degree (PhD) in Chemistry or Pharmaceutical Sciences with experience in synthetic organic chemistry and/or medicinal chemistry
  • You did not reside, study or work in Belgium for more than 24 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the recruitment date (eligibility rule for postdoc with a subsidy)
  • You are expected to apply for a junior or senior post-doctoral grant with the Flemish Science Foundation (FWO) in the 2021 or 2022 call.
  • Your academic qualities comply with the requirements stipulated in the university’s policy.
  • You co-supervise PhD students
  • You are quality-oriented, conscientious, creative and cooperative.
  • You have strong communication skills.
  • You are fluent in academic English (speaking and writing)

We offer
