The Fonds National de la Recherche Luxembourg is funding a collaborative research project between the University of Luxembourg’s Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) group, the Interdisciplinary Research Group in Socio-Technical Cybersecurity (IRISC) at the SnT, and the Luxembourg Institute of Science & Technology (LIST). Together they will address the critical topic of dark patterns* in online services.
*Dark patterns are interface designs “that benefit an online service by coercing, steering or deceiving users into making decisions that, if fully informed and capable of selecting alternatives, they would not make” (Mathur, 2019).
Your Role...
You will support the research team to devise a taxonomy of dark patterns and study the effect of dark patterns on user behaviour empirically. The project goal is to define interventions that will enable educators, designers, engineers and regulators to repel the use of dark patterns in online services. More generally, you will support the research group’s expertise in User Experience design for socio-technical security.
As part of the Human-Computer Interaction Group, you are expected to:
Conduct original and interdisciplinary research in human-computer interaction on the topic of dark patterns
Publish research results in high-impact journals and present them at international conferences
Collaborate with the project partners and liaise with relevant stakeholders
Take responsibility for official deliverables / reports
Support research group activities (i.e., PhD candidate supervision, research proposal drafting, teaching, colloquia presentations, animation of creativity sessions)
Your Profile...
PhD degree in human-computer interaction, psychology, social sciences or a related discipline such as computer science
Well familiar with HCI concepts and methods for UX design and evaluation
Team-oriented and at ease connecting with people
High interest and proficiency with ICT
Written and spoken proficiency in English is mandatory; proficiency in French or German is a plus
