Position Summary

This is a postdoctoral research position in the area of power systems and smart grids. The successful candidate will contribute to industry and government-funded research projects focused on the operation and planning of future electricity grids, covering topics including: demand response, decentralised electricity markets, and the electrification of the heating and transport sectors.The successful candidate will have full access to equipment and technical expertise within the MaREI Centre and the UCC School of Engineering, which includes a range of advanced electrical and energy storage test infrastructure including a configurable 90kVA microgrid with a hardware-assisted real-time simulator. This postdoctoral research position will provide significant opportunities for collaboration with UCC and MaREI/ERI industry partners (which include ESB Networks and EirGrid), and research groups from top universities in Europe and the United States.

MaREI is a key research centre within UCC’s Environmental Research Institute (ERI) which is an internationally recognised Institute for environmental research dedicated to the understanding and protection of our natural environment and to developing innovative technologies, tools and services to facilitate a transformation to a zero carbon and resource efficient society. The MaREI Centre is an SFI funded research centre headquartered in the ERI and includes 11 other Universities and Third Level Institutes from across Ireland, has 50 industrial partners and has research funding of approximately €60m. It combines the expertise of a wide range of research groups and industry partners, with the shared mission of solving the main scientific, technical and socio-economic challenges across the climate, energy and marine spaces. MaREI is also funded by SEAI, EI, EPA, ERDF, EU, HEA, Marine Institute, DCCAE and IRC, as well as through contributions from our industry partners. Researchers in the MaREI Centre have over 30 years of experience in conducting fundamental and applied research supported by competitively won national and international funding, and commercial contracts with government agencies and industry.

This Post-Doctoral Researcher will join a vibrant, international, and highly-successful MaREI research community of more than 200 multi-disciplinary researchers across 13 institutions in Ireland. The successful candidate will also benefit from the full range of UCC support services, which include tailored researcher training and development programmes for Post-Doctoral Researchers provided by UCC Human Resources, Research Support Services, and the MaREI Centre.

Post Duration: 2 years

Salary: €38,630-€45,942 p.a. (IUA Salary Scale)
