Alphonse Mucha: The Artist as Visionary

Celebrating 35 years of Korea-Czech diplomatic relations, the exhibition showcases the artist’s iconic style and his belief in art as a force for humanity, identity, and hope through the themes of "seeing" and "envisioning". 

To commemorate the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Czech Republic and Korea, we present a special exhibition that brings together the artistic world of the Art Nouveau master Alphonse Mucha.

After creating a sensation throughout Paris with his 1895 poster Gismonda, Mucha rose to the pinnacle of commercial art while devoting his life to the themes of Czech independence and national identity. His masterpiece and lifelong culmination of that mission is the monumental oil-painting cycle The Slav Epic, which is regarded as a symbolic artistic tribute to the history and spirit of freedom of the Slavic people.

This exhibition has been organized in close collaboration with the Mucha Trust, the official foundation dedicated to preserving and studying Mucha’s artistic legacy. John Mucha, Alphonse Mucha’s grandson and President of the Mucha Trust, as well as Tomoko Sato, the Trust’s senior curator, have participated directly in the planning, adding depth and authenticity to the exhibition.

Highlights

11 Czech National Treasures in Korea

To commemorate the 35th anniversary of Korea–Czech diplomatic relations, the exhibition features 11 Czech national treasures, shown in Korea with special permission from the Czech government, along with 18 rare oil and tempera works by Mucha.

Mucha’s Artistic Journey Through Media

A media space featuring commentary by Mucha Trust curator Tomoko Sato offers an immersive audiovisual experience that traces Mucha’s artistic journey from Paris to Prague and introduces his innovative working methods.

First Public Presentation of the Mucha House

For the first time in Korea, the exhibition reveals Prague’s “Mucha House,” which has never been open to the public. Personal stories told by Mucha’s grandson, John Mucha, along with video footage capturing traces of Mucha’s life, add depth and emotional resonance to the exhibition.

체코 수교 35주년을 기념하여 아르누보의 거장 알폰스 무하(Alphonse Mucha)의 예술세계를 총망라하는 특별전을 선보입니다.

그는 1895년 <지스몽다> 포스터로 파리 전역에 센세이션을 일으킨 이후, 상업예술의 정상에 오르면서도 조국 체코의 독립과 민족 정체성을 평생의 주제로 삼았습니다. 그 결실이자 걸작이 바로 대형 유화 연작 <<슬라브 서사지(The Slav Epic)>>이며, 이는 체코 민족의 역사와 자유정신을 상징하는 기념비적인 예술로 평가받습니다.

이번 전시는 무하의 유산을 보존하고 연구하는 공식 신탁기관인 무하 트러스트(Mucha Trust)와의 긴밀한 협력으로 기획되었습니다. 알폰스 무하의 손자이자 무하 트러스트 대표인 존 무하(John Mucha)와 수석 큐레이터 토모코 사토(Tomoko Sato)가 기획에 직접 참여해 전시의 깊이를 더합니다.

한국-체코 수교 35주년을 기념해 체코 정부의 특별 반출 허가를 받은 체코 국보 11점과 함께, 쉽게 만날 수 없는 무하의 유화와 템페라 작품 18점을 선보입니다.

미디어로 만나는 무하의 예술여정

무하 트러스트 큐레이터 토모코 사토의 해설이 담긴 미디어 공간은 파리에서 프라하로 이어지는 무하의 예술 여정과 진보적인 작업 방식을 몰입형 미디어 아프로 구성하여 전시에 특별함을 더합니다.

무하 하우스 최초 공개

일반에 공개되지 않았던 프라하의 ‘무하 하우스’가 국내 최초로 공개됩니다. 무하의 손자, 존 무하가 직접 들려주는 이야기와 함께 그의 삶의 흔적을 담은 영상이 전시에 깊이와 감동을 더합니다.
