This position is new at the University, and thus it provides you a unique opportunity to globally advance internationally high-level Finnish research in the field of biological and environmental sciences. You will be a member of the Faculty’s management team and report to your supervisor, the Vice-Dean of Societal Interaction. As a director you will also be a supervisor for the employees assigned to you. Your office will be located at the University of Helsinki’s Viikki Campus, but your position will require regular travelling in Finland and abroad.

Your primary function will be to increase the significance of the stations in the research and teaching of the Faculty, improve their influence locally and nationally and strengthen their position amongst international research stations. You will be responsible for the economy of the stations, for their strategic leadership and development as an entity and for making the stations an integral part of the Faculty. You will enable the efficient, practical and appropriate use of the stations' research infrastructure and resources. As a director you will operate fluently in national and international research networks and you will promote cooperation and form partnerships with other Finnish and international universities, research institutes and other key stakeholders of the stations.

We expect you to have prior experience as a director at the strategic level, excellent leadership skills and a proven track record in research and understanding of university level teaching – with particular emphasis on participation in research projects and success in funding applications. We value your relevant doctoral degree, but at a minimum a second-cycle academic degree is a must. Furthermore we value your language skills and your ability to collaborate and negotiate. You are an experienced player in the academic field and an active networker. You are also a credible communicator and successful operator in societal interaction.

There are approximately 60 employees of research and teaching staff and support staff working in the stations. Our stations host annually numerous national and international researchers and research groups and many courses from a wide variety of fields. The stations are located in a way that they represent the quintessential features of Finnish nature and the infrastructure is built to ensure vital support services for research and teaching.

Your salary will be based on the salary system of Finnish universities. The average annual salary is about 73 000 – 90 000 euros.
