Call for Freelance Junior Researchers - Brussels, Belgium

The KF-VUB Korea Chair at the Brussels School of Governance of Vrije Universiteit Brussel is looking for five (5) freelance junior researchers to contribute to the project ‘South Korea-EU Cooperation in Global Governance’, generously sponsored by the Korea Foundation. The researchers must be Republic of Korea nationals.

The project seeks to produce a report on South Korea-EU relations focusing on global governance in the following areas: democracy, health, human rights, human security, and trade. The purpose of the project is to critically evaluate and analyse how South Korea and the EU can cooperate to promote cooperation in these areas at the global level at a time when they are being challenged by multiple actors. The report will provide South Korean and the European Union policy-makers, as well as think tank, university, and other experts, with an analysis of areas of potential cooperation and actionable recommendations. The project will run from March to December 2021.

The project researchers will work closely with the project coordinator, KF-VUB Korea Chair Dr. Ramon Pacheco Pardo, and with senior researchers Dr. Eric Ballbach (KF Visiting Fellow, German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP)) on the topic of human security, Dr. Alica Kizekova (Head of Asia Pacific Unit, Institute of International Relations (IIR)) on democracy, Dr. John Nilsson-Wright (Korea Foundation Korea Fellow and Senior Research Fellow for Northeast Asia, Chatham House) on human rights, Dr. Francoise Nicolas (Director of the Center for Asian Studies, French Institute of International Relations (IFRI)) on trade, and Dr. Szymon Zaręba (Head of the Global Issues Programme, Polish Institute of International Affairs (PISM)) on health. Each junior researcher will be paired with a senior researcher and, in this way, benefit from close collaboration and supervision. Project team members will connect mainly via online platforms such as Teams and Zoom.

What do we offer

  • Mentoring and training on policy report research and writing

  • Co-authorship of a policy report

  • US$1,000 honorarium fee

We are looking for five PhD students or recent Postdoctoral researchers to

  • Assist senior researchers in data collection and research

  • Attend two online project workshops (in spring and fall 2021)

  • Co-author the report chapter on the topic agreed (democracy, health, human rights, human security, or trade)

The candidate should have

  • A PhD in Social Sciences or Political Sciences with a focus on Northeast Asian affairs, European affairs, or global governance. The candidate should complete their PhD on or after February 2016, or be currently enrolled in a recognised PhD programme.

  • Qualitative methods research experience

  • Good academic writing skills in English

  • ROK nationality
