Stockholm +50

In 1972, the first United Nations (UN) conference on the human environment was held in 1972 in Stockholm. This meeting was the starting point for the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), which is the global authority for the implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development. 50 years after this meeting, the governments of Sweden and Kenya are commemorating the 1972 meeting by hosting the UN meeting “Stockholm+50: a healthy planet for the prosperity of all – our responsibility, our opportunity”. 

SDSN and Stockholm +50: Acting for a healthy planet

The United Nations' Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) mobilizes global scientific and technological expertise to promote practical solutions for sustainable development. One important task is to connect researchers, sustainability professionals and change agents, to address the triple-planetary crisis and how it can be mitigated. 

Inspired by the Stockholm +50, SDSN Northern Europe and SDSN Kenya invite SDSN members and other interested organisations worldwide in a discussion on how we can create action for the environmental dimension of sustainable development.

Speakers

Jeffrey Sachs

Professor and President, Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN)

Professor Jeffrey Sachs is President of the SDSN. Sachs also serves as the Director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University, where he holds the rank of University Professor. Sachs held the position of Director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University from 2002 to 2016. Sachs is a commissioner of the UN Broadband Commission for Development, and an SDG Advocate for UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres. From 2001-18, Sachs served as Special Advisor to UN Secretaries-General Kofi Annan (2001-7), Ban Ki-moon (2008-16), and António Guterres (2017-18).

Joyeeta Gupta

Professor and Co-chair of UNEP's GEO-6, University of Amsterdam

Joyeeta Gupta is one of the scientific advisors of the UNEP Synthesis Report ‘Making Peace with Nature - A scientific blueprint to tackle the climate, biodiversity and pollution emergencies’. She was also co-chair of the GEO-6 and led the research in the areas of environmental sustainability and governance. She is co-chair of the Earth Commission established by Future Earth and the Global Commons Alliance and full professor of environment and development in the global south at the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research of the University of Amsterdam and IHE Delft Institute for Water Education.

Pierre Boileau

Head of the Global Assessment Unit, UN Environment Programme (UNEP)

Pierre Boileau is currently the Head of UNEPs Global Assessment Unit  and of the Global Environment Outlook programme at the UN Environment Programme. In this role, he has led his team to complete the global assessment for the sixth Global Environment Outlook, GEO 6.

Pia M. Kohler

Dr., International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), UMass Boston

Pia M. Kohler is a Team Leader, Writer and Editor with the Earth Negotiations Bulletin at the International Institute for Sustainable Development. She is based in Massachusetts where she works as a freelance researcher and report writer. She is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Massachusetts Boston's Center for Governance and Sustainability. 

Gun Rudquist

The Baltic Sea Centre at Stockholm University

Gun Rudquist was educated at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and Cornell Univ in the United States. Her main professional background has been at the interface between science and advocacy work, latest at the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation (SSNC). Gun's most recent role there was as head of the department of Marine and Agriculture Issues and Law.

Bessy Eva Kathambi

Dr., University of Nairobi

Dr. Bessy Eva Kathambi has a Ph.D. in Environmental Governance and Management. She currently works as a Lecturer at the Wangari Maathai Institute of Peace and Environmental Studies, Department of Earth and Climate Sciences University of Nairobi.

    Dr. Eng. Hiram M. Ndiritu is Senior Lecturer, Mechanical Engineering Department, Ag. Principal College of Engineering and Technology, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. He is also the Project Director of MTCC Africa project, a project funded by the European Union (EU) and implemented by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

    Vice President of Networks, SDSN

      María Cortés Puch is the Vice President of Networks of SDSN. She joined SDSN in 2013 and currently leads its efforts to build a global network of universities, research centers and civil society organizations that pursue sustainable development innovation locally through research, public education, executive training, demonstration projects, convening of social stakeholders and incubation of solutions.
