[Explanation of institution]

Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Leading Initiative for Excellent Young Researchers

The International Research Center for Japanese Studies (Nichibunken) is a government-funded inter-university research institute, whose mission is both to conduct research into Japanese culture and history through international collaboration and cooperation, and to support scholars active overseas in Japanese studies.

At Nichibunken, we are promoting two projects as integral to our 3rd Mid-Term Plans. They are “Cooperation-Building through the Consortium for Global Japanese Studies,"and “Creating New Images of Japan through Historical and International Research into Popular Culture."Our hope is to enhance further international research on Japan as we approach the 4th Term.

For the present post, we are seeking a young scholar who can promote a new type of international research on Japan and a new type of collaborative research, which will see the merging and development of the two afore-mentioned projects, while adhering to Nichibunken's mission.

International research on Japan, both within Japan and overseas, is entering a new stage with international, social circumstances in a state of volatility.

We seek an outstanding young scholar who has a contemporary, international perspective and outstanding foreign language skills. He or she must be able to build extensive networks, to develop collaborative research involving an international, multi-disciplinary, comparative approach which engages with popular culture. He or she will thus contribute toward a renewal of the study of Japan.

We hope to recruit one scholar at Assistant Professor level, who will join Nichibunken in October 2019.
