ORGANISERDWIH New Delhi
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in Geneva is the particle physics collider with the highest energy world-wide. Hence, it provides the opportunity for precision tests of physics of elementary particles as well as maximum sensitivity to new physics beyond the Standard Model. In this presentation, elementary particle physics as pursued at the LHC will be introduced and latest results will be presented. In addition, the project "PiA - Physics in Advent" shall also be introduced as an example outreach project for schools and the general public to foster their interest in science and STEM education in general. It is internet-based and encourages children and high-school students to perform simple physics experiments with household-type material.
Prof. Dr. Arnulf Quadt
Professor, Experimental Particle Physics, Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, Germany.
After completing his study of Physics and Mathematics from University of Bonn (1993), Prof. Quadt received Master of Sciences by research and PhD from University of Oxford, UK. After finishing PostDoc at the University of Oxford (1998), he held several positions - at CERN as Research Fellow (1999-2001), Junior Faculty at University of Bonn (2001-2006), visiting Assistant Professor at University of Rochester/ NY as Humboldt Fellow (2003-2005), and Heisenberg fellow at Max-Plank Institute for Physics, Munich (2006).
His current research includes Particle Physics at accelerators (Large Hadron Collider and Tevatron), pixel detector development, grid computing, Data Analysis (top quark, higgs boson, Standard Model) and Monte Carlo simulation. He is the Board member of the German Physical Society (DPG) and serve as member of Grid Project Board of Helmholtz Alliance "Physics at the Terascale" and BMBF-FSP101 (ATLAS), BMBF-FIS and WLCG. He is the member of steering committee and lecturer for the CERN School of Computing.
Prof. Quadt is well known for several initiatives in outreach activities in Physics at Georg-August-Universität Göttingen such as the Physics Show - Magical Physics (Zauberhafte Physik); Physics in Advent (PiA); Physics for Refugees (PfF); Hands-on Particle Physics - International Masterclasses for High School Students; and "Rent-a-Scientist"- Programme for Schools.
