On Friday 23 September the European Research Day took place in Chandigarh. The successful event was attended by 150 participants from nearby universities and research labs, EU member states, EU Delegation, and EURAXESS India representatives. The event was organised by EURAXESS India in collaboration with the Delegation of the European Union to India.

The audience learned about EU-India cooperation on research and innovation, research opportunities in Europe and grant opportunities. The event provided an excellent overview of EU-India Partnership on Research & Innovation, upcoming co-funding calls, and opportunities of cooperation under Horizon Europe with focus on mobility programmes, i.e. Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA), European Research Council Grants.

Throughout the day, presentations were made on concrete research opportunities in Europe, with testimonies of successful participants and room for interactive question and answer sessions and networking opportunities.

The event was opened with welcoming remarks from Dr. Samrat S. Kumar, EURAXESS India Country Coordinator and Mr. Pierrick Fillon-Ashida, First Counsellor, Head of R&I Section, Delegation of the European Union to India. Dr. Samrat S. Kumar presented EURAXESS-- Researchers in Motion, the European Commission initiative which links researchers in India with Europe and provides free information and events on research funding, research careers and collaboration opportunities. The audience was also welcomed by Dr. Jatinder Kaur Arora, Executive Director Punjab State Council for Science & Technology-cum-Member Secretary, Punjab Biodiversity Board and Prof Deepti Gupta, Panjab University and by Prof. Deepti Gupta, Dean International Students, Panjab University.

Dr. Vivek Dham, R&I Section, Delegation of the European Union to India presented the EU-India Partnership on Research & Innovation and cooperation opportunities with focus on the Horizon Europe framework. Dr Praveen Kumar, the Chair MCAA Indian Chapter, spoke of the Marie Curie Alumni Association (MCAA).

Participants could learn about research opportunities in EU members states (Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Sweden, The Netherlands), and network with representatives from the Member States as well as the Delegation of the European Union to India.

The audience consisted of scientists, academia, industry and SMEs from India, mostly from CSIR-CSIO, Panjab University, IISER-Mohali, IIT Ropar, IIT Roorkee, Chitkara University, and other higher education institutions in and around Chandigarh.

The event's ultimate aim was to contribute towards increasing the number of Indian researchers and innovators participating in the EU's Research and Innovation Programme 'Horizon Europe' and in the bilateral schemes offered by Member States and their leading institutes and universities.

Horizon Europe is the EU’s key funding programme for research and innovation with a budget of €95.5 billion. It tackles climate change, helps to achieve the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and boosts the EU’s competitiveness and growth. The programme facilitates collaboration and strengthens the impact of research and innovation in developing, supporting and implementing EU policies while tackling global challenges. It supports creating and better dispersing of excellent knowledge and technologies.

To conclude, Mr. Pierrick Fillon-Ashida, Research and Innovation Counsellor at the Delegation of the European Union to India said, “In line with the EU-India Strategic Partnership cooperation with India will be stepped up to address together global challenges and sustainable modernisation.”

He further added, “India-EU must deepen cooperation in the areas like Health, Agriculture, Water, Renewable Energy, biotechnology, Electric mobility, ICT, AI, Robotics and Environment.”

 

EURAXESS India is a tool of the European Commission to facilitate the mobility of researchers in all fields.
