2017 Tour of China Blog – Hong Kong

News Highlights

The second stop in this week’s 2017 China- Europe Research and Innovation Tour (CN | EN) was Hong Kong. The event was hosted by the Polytechnic University of Hong Kong in their distinguished Senate room.

Hong Kong is part of China but as most of you know it has very special history and ties to Europe and is governed today as a Special Administration Zone. As such the Research Grant Council of Hong Kong has had since 2016 a special and separate co-funding agreement with the European Union. Today’s event included many success stories from the co-funding schemes as well as very promising remarks about the continuation of the scheme.

The event was a great success with many new members of the EURAXESS network here in Hong Kong, even though the Country Representative was a little under the weather. It’s flu season and when coming over from the mainland the he seem to have managed to catch a bit of it.

A potent virus can very quickly spread through the modern world with increased global mobility of people, and that is true in particular when it comes to the densely populated Pearl River Delta . Thankfully one of the examples of the co-funded research project presented in today‘s event is the Horizon 2020 funded Delta-Flu project that brings together scientists from all over the world to study the dynamics of avian influenza in today’s globalized environment. The University of Hong Kong is one of the participants.
