"The second MCAA Brazil-Europe Workshop (BREUW) was held from 12-14 September 2018 on the verdant Botucatu Campus of the State University of São Paulo (UNESP). The international workshop on Multidisciplinary Research Perspectives was hosted by the School of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science (FMVZ), in combination with with the 3rd UNESP-University of Glasgow Research Perspectives Workshop. The 3-day event was open to all areas of knowledge, and designed to foster cooperation and promote networking between Brazilian and European researchers from academia, industry and non-governmental organizations. A complementary aim was to strengthen internationalisation programmes in Brazilian and European universities, and build links for future collaborations. Invited speakers included policy makers, managers, and researchers who shared their experience in international mobility and cooperation projects in Brazil and Europe, as well as their research perspectives on fields ranging from human and animal health to nanotechnology to scientific drilling of the continents and oceans. The workshop also included a poster session in which 36 undergraduate and graduate researchers from UNESP presented their research to participants.

BREUW II in Bocutacu follows the successful first workshop held one year ago (27-29 September 2017) at the Federal University of Maranhão, São Luís. The BREUW workshops are the result of a partnership between the MCAA Brazil Chapter and EURAXESS Brazil, with support from universities hosting the events. The Marie Curie Alumni Association (MCAA) is an international non-profit association created in 2013 to bring together all past and present beneficiaries of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, research scholarships for international mobility available through the research and innovation programs of the European Union.

The BREUW II workshop opened by noting the voyage of Marie Skłodowska-Curie to Brazil in July-August 1926, during which she gave lectures to promote the public communication of science, and visited research institutions in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Minas Gerais. This included a visit to the National Museum in Rio de Janeiro. The workshop began by observing a minute’s silence, to mark the tragic loss of the National Museum by fire on 2 September 2018."
