SERI - Special COVID-19 Call for Projects Grants with Asia [Research funding]

The Leading House Asia, ETH Zurich has decided to launch a special COVID-​​19 call for project grants in order to support the collective effort to better understand the virus as well as its numerous implications, and prepare for society’s future. The call is open to all scientific disciplines including social sciences and humanities.

Funding is available to allow researchers based in Switzerland and Asian countries to collaborate on research projects on the COVID-19 virus itself or on any of its possible implications.

The call is aimed at both new and existing collaborations.

Who can apply:

  • Swiss-based applicant: all senior scientists of Swiss federal and cantonal universities, universities of applied sciences and universities of teacher education, as well as public research institutions, are eligible to apply. Applications by doctoral students and postdoctoral scientists must be submitted by their supervisors. The Switzerland-​based scientist is the main applicant.

  • Applicant in Asia: Research partners must be scientists affiliated with a university or a public research institute from one of the partner countries. University hospitals in partner countries are also eligible. The collaborating partner must hold a faculty or senior scientist position, or a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) with several years of research experience. Eligible countries: China (incl. Hong Kong and Taiwan), Japan, South Korea, ASEAN member states (partner countries) (incl. Singapore).

Funding and duration:

  • Max. CHF 25’000 for up to 12 months.

  • The project grant can be used to develop a joint project proposal for submission for major funding to funding agencies (e.g. national funding agencies or EU funding schemes) or to develop a partnership between two institutions or chairs. Partial salary costs may only be granted for the author of a joint proposal to be submitted to a funding agency (salary expenditures for the Principle Investigator will not be covered).

  • The project grant does not cover salaries of doctoral students or exchange of young researchers, which are covered by the mobility instruments of the same bilateral programme.

  • A roundtrip economy ticket up to 2 kCHF per trip may be granted.

  • Accommodation costs and consumables or equipment for meetings, lab work, studies and alike can be granted.
