In 2006, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe decided to designate the 28 January as Data Protection Day. It is now celebrated annually across the world. International Data Protection Day highlights the importance of safeguarding personal data and ensuring privacy in a digitally interconnected world. As data continues to drive innovation, particularly in research and development, it is crucial to establish and maintain robust data protection frameworks.
Research projects under Horizon Europe, the EU'ss flagship programme for research and innovation, heavily rely on the collection, sharing, and analysis of data across borders: from health research to environmental sustainability, research projects often involve sensitive personal and scientific data.
Upholding the principles of data protection in Horizon Europe projects is not just a legal obligation under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) It is a cornerstone to foster trust among participants and research partners.
