Happy National Day, Cyrpus! On this occasion, we are happy to highlight the country's commitment to strengthening its research and innovation ecosystem and expanding its international connections. Cyprus has set out an ambitious agenda to promote scientific excellence, support innovation and strengthen cooperation between research organisations, universities and industry. Its National Research and Innovation Strategy 2024–2026 places particular emphasis on internationalisation, knowledge transfer, research excellence and the development of innovative businesses.
Looking ahead: A new funding framework for research and innovation
A recent development underlines Cyprus's continued commitment to this agenda. On 29 September 2026, the Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF) launched a public consultation on its proposed research and innovation funding portfolio for 2028–2034.
The proposed framework covers five areas: research, knowledge transfer, innovation, infrastructure and skills, and internationalisation. It reflects Cyprus's ambition to develop its research capacities, support the translation of knowledge into practical applications and strengthen its position in the international research landscape.
Opportunities for collaboration between Cyprus and Southeast Asia
Cyprus's focus on research excellence, innovation and international partnerships creates opportunities to explore closer links with Southeast Asia. Both regions share interests in areas such as digital technologies, sustainable development, innovative materials and the application of research to societal challenges. European research and innovation programmes, including Horizon Europe and the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA), provide frameworks through which researchers and organisations can establish partnerships, exchange expertise and develop joint research activities. As Cyprus continues to strengthen its research and innovation ecosystem, there is scope to build new connections with universities, research institutions and innovation stakeholders across Southeast Asia.
On its National Day, EURAXESS ASEAN warmly invites researchers and organisations in Cyprus and Southeast Asia to explore opportunities for collaboration, exchange and scientific cooperation.
