The University of Cologne

The University of Cologne is one of Europe’s oldest universities. It was founded in 1388 by the Archbishop of Cologne, Hermann II von Wied, who gave it his personal protection. The Pope granted the university its charter and recognized it as an institution for higher learning. The university has about 40,000 students enrolled and offers degrees across all levels from bachelors to doctorates.

The Univesity of Cologne was an important and active member of the Excellence Initiative of the German Council for Science and Humanities and the German Research Foundation from 2012 to 2019.  It is one of Europe’s oldest universities. It has 10 faculties that offer 191-degree programs across six academic fields and more than 45 Nobel Prize winners. The University’s motto is “Lux et veritas” (Light and truth).

Title: PhD Position (f/m/d)

Location: CECAD Uhlirova Lab of Development and Cancer

Position Type: The position is available as soon as possible on a part-time basis with 25,89 working hours. The position is limited to three years. If the necessary prerequisites required by tariff regulations as well as the sought after personal qualifications are met, the salary will correspond to the pay grade 13 as specified in the States’ Tariff Agreement (TVL).

YOUR TASKS:

» To study the crosstalk between transcription and pre-mRNA splicing under physiological, stress, and disease conditions

» To investigate mechanisms underlying spliceosome assembly and functional plasticity

» To study what renders different transcripts, cells, and tissues sensitive to aberrant splicing

» To elucidate how spliceosome malfunction impacts genome stability

and contributes to loss of tissue homeostasis, premature aging and diseases

YOUR PROFILE:

» Master of Science or equivalent in Biology, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics or Biophysics

» Motivation, curiosity and creativity and a strong ability for problem-solving through critical analytical thinking

» Keen interest in the mechanisms of signaling and regulation of gene expression in development and disease

» Ability to drive the project with a high degree of independence

» Good communication skills, fluency in English, sense for teamwork and commitment to high-quality research

» Strong background in genetics and molecular biology is essential

» Experience with model organisms (e.g. Drosophila, mouse), imaging techniques, and knowledge of basic bioinformatics tools are welcome

Title: PhD Student Position: Granular Sound Characterization in Microgravity

Location: Granular Matter Group, Institute for Theoretical Physics

Position Type: The position is available as soon as possible on a part-time basis (29,87 hours per week). It is limited for 3 years. If the applicant meets the relevant wage requirements and personal qualifications, the salary is based on remuneration group 13 TV-L of the pay scale for the German public sector.

YOUR TASKS:

» Data analysis of an ongoing ISS experiment

» Ground reference measurements and refinement of parameters for new runs of the ISS experiment

» Laboratory experiments in cooperation with DLR Cologne

» Combining results of ISS and ground data with externally provided material calibration data to obtain empirical laws

» Theoretical analysis based on Effective Medium Theory

» Identifying and testing relevant mechanisms on different length scales: nonlinear force-laws, force-chain topology, distribution of force fluctuations, crystalline domains

» Exploring extensions of current theories for disordered granular matter

YOUR PROFILE:

» Physics Master or equivalent

» Previous experience of working in physics labs with electronic equipment (microcontrollers, oscilloscopes, etc)

» Programming languages: C, C++, git

» Experience with Linux is beneficial

» Fluent in English, possibly German

» Capable of working in international, multidisciplinary teams

» Resilient and adaptive to high levels of stress and workloads

Title: Bioinformatics postdoctoral position (f/m/d) in the field of plant-microbe interactions

Location: Institute for Plant Sciences

Position Type: The position is available immediately on a full-time basis (39,83 hours per week). It is limited to a term of 2 years with the possibility of extension. If the applicant meets the relevant wage requirements and personal qualifications, the salary is based on remuneration group 13 TV-L of the pay scale for the German public sector.

YOUR TASKS:

» Develop and apply computational tools for the analysis of (meta)genome and (meta)transcriptome and/or amplicon sequencing

» Advance our understanding on how beneficial and detrimental microbes tightly regulate the expression of effector genes, their function and regulation in different plant hosts and in response to other microbes

» Closely interact with computer scientists and experimental biologists

» Employ computational approaches to deepen our understanding of the evolution and functions of plant microbiota

YOUR PROFILE:

» PhD in bioinformatics, biology or in a related discipline with a strong background in bioinformatics

» Proficiency in the use of Linux/Unix and proven experience in scripting and software development (e.g. Python, C/C++, PERL,

Java, R)

» Experience in the analysis of comparative genomics, transcriptomics and/or amplicon sequencing

» The ability to work in an environment at the interface of biology and computer sciences

» Excellent oral and written communication skills in English

Title: Scientific staff (f/m/d) in research data management in TRR341

Location: Regional Computing Center (RRZK)

Position Type: The position is available from 01.01.2023 on a full-time basis (39,83 hours per week). Upon agreement it can also be filled on a part-time basis to facilitate the work-family balance. It is initially limited until 30.06.2026. If the applicant meets the relevant wage requirements and personal qualifications, the salary is based on remuneration group 13 TV-L of the pay scale for the German public sector.

YOUR TASKS:

» Design, development and maintenance of a research data management environment for the TRR341 project in cooperation with C3RDM

» Advice, support and training of the members of the research center regarding the correct handling of research data

» Organizing and conducting workshops in the context of the TRR341 project

» Active participation in events and committees on research data management

» Publication and presentation of research results in work- stores, journals, etc.

YOUR PROFILE:

» Completed university studies (doctorate preferred, at least diploma or master‘s degree) in (bio)informatics, natural sciences, or a related field

» Practical experience in setting up and operating IT systems in a professional environment

» Preferably experience with Docker, Kubernetes and full-stack installation

» Experience with technologies in the research data management environment, e.g. storage systems or data repositories

Title: PostDoctoral Researcher in Public/Labor/Urban Economics (f/m/d)

Location: Department of Economics – Prof. Siegloch | Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences

Position Type: The position is based in the Department of Economics within the Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences, which is consistently ranked among the top schools in research and teaching. The candidate will be part of the ERC-funded research group of Professor Sebastian Siegloch. Collaboration with other members of the DFG-funded Cluster of Excellence „ECONtribute: Markets & Public Policy“, the Center for Marcoeconomic Research (CMR) and the Department of Economics is welcome.

» The project will explore new concepts of nanoscopic photonic sensors.

» Preparation of scientific publications.

» Presentation of the results at national and international conferences, workshops and project meetings.

» PhD degree in physics, photonics, nanotechnology, optical engineering (or equivalent).

» Strong background in either nanofabrication and nano-optics or single molecule microscopy/spectroscopy.

» Experience with optical simulation software (FEM, FDTD)
