Description of Hosting Institution (UJA – Spain)

Jaén University (UJA) was created in 1993 and is in the Top 50 of the world’s best young universities according to THE (Times Higher Education). This ranking analyzes aspects such as teaching, research work, the university’s international outreach, or integration into industry. Besides, the UJA has received the distinction of Campus of International Excellence in the fields of Agrifood (CEIA3) and Climate Change (CamBio), plus it also leads the Andalusian CEI project on historical heritage PatrimoniUN10.

Jaén University has five faculties (Social and Legal Sciences; Humanities and Education Sciences; Health Sciences; Experimental Sciences and Social Work) and two higher polytechnic schools for engineering (Linares and Jaén). In turn, these centers are organized into 35 departments. It also has three Postgraduate educational centers (Doctorate School, Advanced Study Center in Modern Languages and Postgraduate Study Center).

Besides, the full picture of the over 100 UJA groups covers the following research fields of expertise: Agrifood (AGR); Biology (BIO); Health (CTS); Social Sciences, Business, Law (SEJ); Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics (FQM); Humanities (HUM); Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences (RNM); Information and Communications Technology (TIC); and Engineering Production Technology (TEP).

Project description

University Research Institute for Iberian Archaeology (IUIAI) of the University of Jaén (Spain) was founded in 2012 as a transformation of the former Andalusian Centre for Iberian Archaeology. It is a multidisciplinary Institute integrating researchers from different field of knowledge: Archaeology, Prehistory, Medieval History, Chemistry, Mathematics, Information and Communication Technologies. Its objectives and specific aims are:

• Archaeology of the Iberians: For deeper knowledge of the Iberian societies (6th ct. BC-1st ct. BC) in the Iberian Peninsula.

• Historiography about the Culture of the Iberians: For further development of the Andalusian and Spanish identity.

• Landscape Archaeology: For better methodology in archaeology. Emphasis is to be placed on the development of strategies for reconstruction of palaeolandscape and its anthropic transformation based on carpological and anthracological analysis and new technologies for archaeological surveys.

• Battlefield Archaeology/Warfare Archaeology: to understand the meaning of the war at times of the Iberians and paying special attention to methodology to research battlefields.

• Management of Archaeological Heritage: For protection, research, preservation and dissemination strategies. These strategies must ensure knowledge transfer to the society of Andalusia.

• Gender archaeology: to understand the role play by women in the society of the Iberians.

The IAI integrates two laboratories:

• Laboratory of physical-chemical analysis: research of decorations and contents in ceramics vessels using MRS, EDXRF, XRD, GC-MS and HPLC-MS

• Laboratory of palaeoenviromental analysis: analysis of seeds and charcoal

The IUIAI has been involved in several types of European projects:

• CARARE (2010-2013, ICT-PSP Programme) for the provision of cultural 3D content to Europeana

• 3D-ICONS (2012-2015, ICT-PSP Programme) for the digitization of the most relevant European monuments and the ingestion of 3D contents to Europeana.

• CEMEC, Connecting European Medieval European Collections (2015-2019, Creative Europe Programme, 2015-1143/001-001) for development of a transnational exhibition using ICT.

• Europeana Archaeology (2019-2020), Connecting European Facilities Programme. INEA/CEF/ICT/A2018/1637435) for improving the quality of the information about the Iberians in Europeana

Currently the IUIAI is developing research projects funded by the National Research Programme and PAIDI 2020

• ArqueoGen-Olea. Origin and evolution of olive tree in Iberian Peninsula using morphometry and DNA in archaeological remains. P18-FR-2903. 2020-2023

According the above, the research lines to be developed by the candidates will be the next:
