Description of Hosting Institution (UJA – Spain)

Jaén University (UJA) was created in 1993 and is in the Top 50 of the world’s best young universities according to THE (Times Higher Education). This ranking analyzes aspects such as teaching, research work, the university’s international outreach, or integration into industry. Besides, the UJA has received the distinction of Campus of International Excellence in the fields of Agrifood (CEIA3) and Climate Change (CamBio), plus it also leads the Andalusian CEI project on historical heritage PatrimoniUN10.

Jaén University has five faculties (Social and Legal Sciences; Humanities and Education Sciences; Health Sciences; Experimental Sciences and Social Work) and two higher polytechnic schools for engineering (Linares and Jaén). In turn, these centers are organized into 35 departments. It also has three Postgraduate educational centers (Doctorate School, Advanced Study Center in Modern Languages and Postgraduate Study Center).

In regards to its research, there are five specialized centers at Jaén University. The research group FQM-322 was founded in 2002 by Prof. Josep Martí and it is currently leaded by Prof. Pedro Luque-Escamilla since 2012. Their international members conform a research unit working mostly on Galactic high-energy astrophysics in a multi-wavelength context. Our results have deserved to be published in the best journals in the field, such as Science, Astrophysical Journal or Astronomy and Astrophysics.

During its existence, the group has been recipient of local, regional and national funding under different competitive calls. Starting in 2011, the group is actually involved in the international Consortium for the construction of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) with its main contribution being in the Physics and Large Size Telescope (LST) working groups.

Project description

Our research activity is currently structured into two main lines of work in observational astrophysics.

• Multi-wavelength study of galactic collimated jets and outflows (e.g. microquasars, gamma-ray binaries, massive YSOs, …) and their connection with non-thermal phenomena across the whole electromagnetic spectrum.
• Participation in the CTA, mainly contributing to prepare the future observation strategies and science with this new observatory. Our main interest is on galactic TeV emitters. The group staff also includes one engineer working on the design of the access tower for the LSTs in the central parts of the array.
